The win brought the Catamounts to 15-15 overall and 5-4 in conference. The first game of the three game series, originally set for Friday evening, was postponed due to rain and set-up a double header on Saturday. The first contest displayed an array of offense by the Catamounts as they scored an almost unbelievable 22 runs off of 20 hits. Pitcher Drew Saberhagen went seven innings in the contest and only gave up four runs, with three being earned. He allowed only two walks and totaled five strikeouts. Remarkably he took down the first eight batters before allowing a hit. While Saberhagens pitching kept the Wildcats from getting any of- fensive momentum, the bats of the Cat- amounts rang loud in Hennon Stadium. Fifteen runs were scored in just five innings, with eight scored in the third. Senior Blake Murphy hit two homers, the first scoring two runs and the latter scoring three. Senior Jason Haynes and Freshman Matt Johns also got in on the action hitting home runs. Sophomores Dylan de Graaf and Stephen Notaro had nice days offensively with both driving in two runs apiece. The second game was mich more competitive, as the Catamounts had to come back from an 8 to 5 deficit in the eighth inning. Up 3 to 1, David- sons Hugh Eden hit a two run shot with two outs to tie the game up at three. The Wildcats scored five more runs leading into the bottom of the eighth i ae to take an 8 to 5 advantage. In the latter half of the eighth inning however, the Catamounts rallied Pitcher Tyler Sexton. Photo Credit: catamountsports.cstv.com behind solid hitting and two pivotal er- up the bases again. Jason Haynes hit a_ error came off of a fielding mistake, al- fly ball to shallow right field that was dropped by the Wildcat second base- man, allowing him to advance to third. After a walk and a single, the bases were loaded for Nick Liles who drove inarun off of a single. Sophomore Brent Greer also knotted a single to score a run and Barrett Shaft brought in another off of his ground out to second. In the finale on Sunday, Tyler Sexton was a large key to the Cata- mounts win and completion of the series sweep. After coming in as a reliever in the last 4 innings, Sexton allowed just one unearned run to preserve Westerns 8-4 lead. : Offensively the game was once again dominated by Blake Murphy who went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Barrett Shaft, Dylan de Graaf and Tyler Kirkpatrick also had multiple hit games. After Da- vidson tied the game in the fourth in- ning, the Catamounts responded with a big inning in the sixth to take the lead for good. Blake Murphy hit a two run RBI and then scored his self off of an RBI by de Graaf. The Catamounts return home after.a two. road series yith, a contest against Clemson on Tuesday night April 22 anda home series against Southern Conference opponent Furman April 25-27. FL UMS UENO a nn ae ne . conference: The big schools we play > williiat least:know we arent to be WCU Sports Grumble By Joel Gerber Sports Editor CULLOWHEEHave you heard of Davidson? What about Appalachian State? Apparently these schools did something or other this year that Ive heard about on ESPN. I think I heard the term upset once or twice this year and I dont think it was referring to the morale of a six-year-old whose birthday cake came in purple and not green. What did these schools do, aside from loosing to Western in base- ball? Blah, blah, blah, beat Michigan in the greatest upset of all time, blah, elite 8, blah, blah. This has obviously been a big year in the Southern Conference, though not necessarily for Western Carolina. Its tough goings, having to live vicariously through our rivals. Pll admit, I enjoyed watching David- son last month and I almost bought a black and gold 34-32 T-shirt in the Fall. My question is, what exactly does the success of our rivals mean for WCU? Though were not David- son, or not App. State, we still play them which has to say something about us. For one thing, better com- petition brings more respect for the taken lightly, even if they couldnt spell Cullowhee. Teams will play us to the best of their, ability because they dont want to be another Michi- gan, shaking their heads and pulling out their atlases to figure out where Western Carolina University is. Another possible side effect of the recent success in the Southern Conference is better recruits for the entire SoCon. Naturally, Davidson will get some recruits for basketball, seeing as LeBron wants to play with Stephen Curry. Hopefully though ina situation like this there will be some recruiting overflow. Davidsons run could trigger more respect for the Southern Conference, and we could gain some recruits interested in play- ing for a smaller D-I schools. A situation like this one could also help out SoCon tournament bids and seedings for the NCAA and NIT tournaments. With a Davidson in our conference we cant have the lowest RPI anymore. Lots of the other small conferences dont have a school thats made the elite 8, especially a team that came within two points of beating the national champion. Two bids into the NCAA will prob- ably never happen for the Southern Conference, but a bid to both NCAA and NIT could be very realistic if we have two good teams in Conference. This recent success will be impor- tant for Western Carolina University Athletics next year when we win the conference tournament and make the NCAA. I just wouldnt want David- son to go without a bid to the NIT after their success this year. It just wouldnt be fair.
