  • April 1, 2008 Page 8 Who is SGA? By: Amanda Peralta Editor In Chief This university is smaller than other universities around North Caro- lina. Many of us know this. I am sure if you asked other NC universities what does SGA do at your school, you will get a great number of answers. So what if you asked the student body at West- ern, what does SGA do on campus? You will notice a look or slight confu- sion to your question. You might even get, SGA? Who is SGA? This fact is a sad but it is true on Westerns campus. I came to Western from a smaller private school that did not have SGA, but I also did not hear or even know about SGA until this semes- ter when I began to receive complaints and people asking me to write stories on this organization. I sat with a blank stair and began to wonder, Where do I go? Who should I ask? Then I saw the SGA floor in the UC only to find an empty room. I am sure hours cant be like this. It is in the middle of the day, where is everyone? Then questions began to surface and I began to wonder what is this association doing for our campus if no one is even in the office? About a month later the West- ern Carolinian, among other student media organizations, got an email from a "concerned student" about SGA and was appalled by the actuations that were brought upon the student organi- zation. | Throughout the email it had complained about the student govern- t stating that many students in SGA My Views. The Editors Column is a Greek organization and use what is called the buddy system. Other information stated that GPAs were low for some students but yet they still were getting paid. Stu- dents that met the GPA requirements were denied a pay check. A require- ment runs in every student organiza- tion on campus stating that they do not get paid if the GPA is lower than a 2.5. Another question that was brought to my attention in this email was what about funding in other organizations? This question arouses many student ran groups because funding budgets will be cut within the year. The email states that if the word government passes by and the event is funded with no questions asked. The statement that ap- palled me the most is about the traffic tickets. Many students on campus do have problems with getting tickets but did you know that SGA runs the court? I was alarmed when finding this out. Why do I want a student to tell me that my ticket can or cannot be appealed? What if one student in the government had a problem with me that day does that mean they will play favorites? In this email the concern student states that many appeals are found guilty but students that are friends with SGA are found not guilty. Alarming right? My question is how fair is this? Do we, as students, should trust a group that is barely known on campus? I wouldnt want any student to be even near my case if I got a parking ticket. I would not want this SGA to even be in the room if they have not done much on campus when | run a student organization and | am in my office at all hours of the night, but students cant stay in theirs. This seems to be another prob- lem the email alerts. They state when going into the SGA office all they see is a dark room. | asked a student if this statement and many more were true, he has much to say and agree with the email. When I hear anyone say any- thing about SGA, I say I hate deal- ing with them as a student leader, junior Kaleb Lynch said. There is never anyone in the office and any request we make is either blocked p r ndered to slow down by red tape. I dont feel any benefit from SGA, but for them a gain. I am the leader to an underdog organization and not any popular group like Greek life organiza- tion, who seem to work fairly well in the SGA. I think SGA need to get off their butts and do something for our campus and not am so concerned with them. Lynch had made other points that was fit to the email and had other problems with the SGA. _ T guarantee that if you ask most people about SGA they will look at you like you have three heads, Lynch said. No one knows what is going on with them. I didnt hear about elections or a debate or anything, and I am definitely around the UC working. That is fishy to me. Do better SGA! : Lynch was not the only student. to feel strongly with the email but an- other student that was asked about the SGA felt that we needed better leader- ~ ship. He said what happen to the former SGA president. Throughout the email it also states that SGA has been known to laugh at other student organizations asking for more money to furnish an event and this even goes back to SGA not being in the office when they are - needed the most. Another point is that many of us agree that there are not many Greek organizations on campus. Accord- ing the Dr. Miller, Chancellor of Stu- dent Affairs, there is only six percent Greeks on this campus when this num- ber should be brought up to 12 percent. So what Greek life is seen on the SGA board? Another "concerned student" email states that there are basically two on the SGA and those are men Greeks, or what they see it as brotherhood. As astudent organization leader and as a student I ask SGA to get into gear with their programs by letting stu- dents know what is going on with the SGA. Get it together SGA! Editors Note: Much of the information in this column is editor opinion. The email was sent by an unnamed student, meaning some of the information may not be factual. A follow up report will be in the next issue of the Western Car- olinian with factual information. HS Mh PS SS
