t ASL ers et OR < @ a . A 4 5 end tet Ar ae ee eee ee ene Ay | Or | Volleyball team drops two straight athome @ @ e@ *@ By Andy Gambill WCnewsmagazine After breaking their eight-match losing streak against Wofford, the Western Carolina volleyball team was hoping to start a winning streak on October 28. Unfortunately for the Cats, that didn't happen. Western would lose 3-0 at home on Senior Day against Georgia Southern, before falling again two days later in Cullowhee against Chattanooga 3-1. The Cats competed well against the Eagles on Senior Day, but they just fell short in each game as they lost 26-30, 23-30, and 24- 30. Meredith Harmon was recognized before the game as she was the only senior on Western's squad. It was fitting then that Harmon would go out and lead the Cats in this match, as she recorded 13 Kills. Sophomores Liz Rondone and Katie Hennessey would also add to the play, along with freshman Jelena Jakovljevic. Rondone contributed 21 digs, while Hennessey put up 33 assists. Jakovljevic would finish with an impressive 17 kills. WCU started off strong in game one as they used the emotion of Senior Day to power them to an early 3-1 lead. The Eagles would use their own 3-1 run to tie the game at four, before going on a 10-5 run to take a commanding 14- 9 lead. Western would fight back to within one point several times in the game, but could never tie or take the lead and eventually lost by four points. Volleyball team breaks eight-match losing streak @ By Andy Gambill Wenewsmagazine In the midst of an eight-match losing streak, the Western Carolina volleyball team was playing some of their worst ball all season long. But that all changed on October 24. Western faced off against Wofford on that night and they were finally able to break the losing streak with a 3-1 (30-27, 32-30, 28-30, 30-19) victory. The Catamounts were led in the hard- fought victory by sophomores Katie Hennessey and Liz Rondone. Hennessey put up an amazing triple-double as she finished the match with 38 assists, 24 digs, and 10 kills plus a nifty .368 attack percentage. Rondone also played outstanding as she was able to put up 32 digs. Senior Meredith Harmon and freshman Jelena Jakovijevic and Ali Rook also played well. Rook finished with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Jakovijevic had 18 kills and 13 digs. Harmon contributed 12 kills. The first game was a very close affair. Wofford started off by scoring the first point, but 2 mead op vVesternGarolinian The Eagles werent so kind in game two as they demolished Western by opening the match on a 20-6 points binge. Western would outscore the Eagles 17-10 from that point, but needless to say they weren't on the winning side. Georgia Southern once again jumped out to a lead in game three but only a 2-0 lead. Western fought back and took the lead at 7-6, but their last lead of the game and match would come at 9-8. Western would tie the game several times but could never re-establish the lead as the Eagles slowly brushed off the Cats en route to a six point win. The Cats would be back in action two days later, but the result wasnt much different. The Cats did however win one game against Chattanooga. The Cats played the Mocs relatively solid as they lost in four games (30-26, 2/-30, 21-30, 25-30). Hennessey led the way in this match as she recorded her sixth career triple-double. The 9'11 setter had an amazing 41 assists, 18 digs, and 13 kills. The other familiar faces of Rondone, Harmon, and Jakovijevic also contributed as Rondone had 21 digs and Harmon finished with 12 kills. Jakovijevic had 15 kills but also contributed 11 errors. Junior Liz McLauchlin played her best match of the season as she had 10 digs. Western started off game one hot WCU quickly scored four straight points. The small lead was held by Western for much of the game until Wofford tied the game at 16. The game would go back and forth for three straight points, before the Cats scored three points to go ahead at 22-19. Western would maintain that advantage until the Terriers came back at 26- 26. The Cats and Terriers would tie each other again onthe next point, but thats when Western kicked it in gear and scored three straight points to finish off game one. WCU picked up in game two from where they ended game one as they went on a 6-1 run to start. Western would extend the lead to seven at 10-3, but Wofford would go on a 10-3 run of their own and tie the game at 13-all. It was all- out war from that point on as neither team would pull ahead by more than three points until WCU went ahead 28-24 late in the game. Even then the Terriers weren't finished as they used a 5-1 run to tie the game at 29 and force the win-by- two rule. Western scored on the next point, but Wofford struck back to tie the game at 30. The Terriers wouldn't be so lucky on the next two points, however, as the Cats slammed the door as they ran the score up to 20-10 before the Mocs even knew what hit them. Unfortunately, the Cats let Chattanooga back into the game as the Mocs outscored Western 16-10 to end game one. While Western still won the game the momentum from that comeback may have given Chattanooga the confidence they needed to win the next three games. Game two was very similar to game one as VWWCU jumped out to a big 12-4 lead. Unfortunately for the Cats, Chattanooga once again came back using a 9-1 run to tie the game at 13. The game was back and forth from that point as neither team would lead by more than two until the Cats went ahead by three at 22-19. The Cats would stretch the lead to five at 25-20, but the Mocs would use a 10-2 run to snatch victory from the hands of defeat. The Moc momentum carried into game three as they busted out with a 22-12 lead. The Cats would outscore Chattanooga 9-8 from that point but it was obviously not enough. With their backs against the wall, the Cats would fight hard in game four; they established a strong three point lead and held it up until 15-12. The Cats continued to lead or be tied with the Mocs until the game was 24-24. The Mocs would finish off Western with a 6-1 run to win the match. The two losses dropped WCU to 8- 22 on the season and 3-12 in the Southern Conference. with two straight scores for the win. Western would once again start off hot in game three at 4-1. Western kept extending their lead until the 16-9 mark. The Terriers would rally from that point as they used an 11-4 run to tie the game at 20. Three more Wofford points would put Western down 23-20. The Cats bounced back from that point by scoring six straight points, but Wofford would once again come back as they finished game three ona /-2 run to win. With memories of their earlier match in the season against Wofforda 3-2 loss in which Wofford rallied from two games downin the back of their mind, the Western volleyball team finally shut the door on the comeback- prone Terriers. The Cats jumped on Wofford from the get-go in game four as they went ahead 11-4 early on. The Cats would stretch their lead to 23-10, before finally letting up and finishing the game at 30-19 to win the match. The win moved WCU to 8-20 on the year and 3-10 in the Southern Conference.
