  • Witches of Today vs. By Whitney Woody * WCnewsmagazine Almost everyone has heard of the horrors of the Salem Witch trials, and | think its safe to Say that as children, and possibly even today, we were or are interested in learning more about the mysteries surrounding witchcraft. According to the common Halloween Stereotypes (as well as Harry Potter affiliations), witches can be green or can be teenage heartthrobs. It's not uncommon for them to have warts, either. All witches fly on brooms and have black cats. Every witch should also have an obscenely large black cauldron in which she brews her most powerful spells. Right? Wrong. In the past, people feared the men and women who practiced witchcraft. The term hex or spell cast fear into the hearts of even the strongest men. The idea of someone with supernatural powers was terrifying and, of course, anyone who practiced a different way of life other than the norm was considered bad. It went without question that witches were in league with the Devil and sought out to bring misery on humanity. While it may be true that some modern witches are rumored to worship the Devil, keep in mind its only a rumor. There are just as many people out there who oppose God and worship the Devil who do not consider themselves to be witches. Devil worshipping has no correlation with the current-day Wicca traditions. In fact, the primary goal of witches of today (or Wiccans) is The Hunt for Ghosts J By Rachel Mitchell Wenewsmagazine Are ghost real? That is the question that drives those who hunt for ghosts. Some spend their whole lives in a quest to answer this question. In recent years, this question is being answered through TV shows like Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted. Both shows use ghost hunting technology to capture any hint of a ghost by investigating places that have reported haunting. The American paranormal investigators are called The Atlantic Paranormal Society, or TAPS. By day, these investigators are plumbers, but by night they hunt for ghosts. According to their official website, TAPS is headed by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson and includes a close- Knit group of paranormal researchers. Built on Jason and Grants mutual interest in getting to the bottom of everyday, paranormal occurrences, TAPS is an eclectic but unified bunch - and certainly not what youd expect to find at the forefront of paranormal investigation. They're neither Ph.D. scientists, nor zany, theatrical hotline psychics. Brought together by their own the understanding of Life and Nature, Evolution and the Mysteries of the Universe. So, now that the general public has at least made a mild attempt to broaden their minds to other traditions, what exactly is Wicca? Wicca is a contemporary _ spiritual religion which is based on reviving the ancient pre-Christian pagan religions of Europe. Wiccans tend to believe in a divine force or power as the source of everything. This power is considered both immanent and transcendent in its role in the universe. Because of this reason, the world and all aspects within the world (nature and life) are considered sacred. The rituals and sacrifices that people expect after seeing Hollywood movies such as The Craft are really just that: Hollywood drama. Simply put, ancient and modern ceremonies, rituals and shamanic practices are performed by various Wiccans in order to attune themselves to the natural rhythms of nature, the world and the universe in an effort to commune with the divine force. ; Keep in mind that Wicca is not just one, Straightforward path. There are several different paths and traditions contained within Wicca and each has its own brand of ritual and magick. This leads us into another stereotype. Say the word magic and the majority of people relate it back to stories of innocent victims being turned into frogs. There is no set answer to what magic/magick really is or if it even exists. To some Wiccans it does, to others it doesnt, it all and Wilson shared an interest in researching these often unexplained occurrences. The team has a show called Ghost Hunters. Each episode starts out with a separate crew capturing TAPS travels, interviews and some of their ghost hunting experience. The crew uses cameras, camcorders, voice recorders and night vision equipment to hunt and track ghosts in various locations across the US. The showing is into its 3" season and improves as the amateur hunters perfect their techniques. There is also an English group who also hunt ghosts in various locations. Their show is called Most Haunted, and in it the team travels across England and has recorded a few shows in some famous ghost homes in the US. This team, unlike Ghost Hunters, is much larger and consists of a historian, a physic or medium, a parapsychologist, a director of investigations and several camera and audio operators. According to their official website, Armed with night-vision and thermal imaging cameras, the crew investigate locations and experiment with parapsychology and sances to connect with individuals who have passed on. Under close surveillance, each member of the team explores Stereotypes of the Past Wy depends on the branch. The most common explanation is that magick is the use and control of natural energies or powers to produce and affect change. There are three basic sources of natural energy: Personal Power, Earth Power and Divine Power. Obviously, Personal Power refers to a persons life force (our existence or even willpower), Earth Power relates back to the power of nature (fire, trees, water, wind, crystals, etc.), and Divine Power is everything spiritual. Any student of a martial arts class is basically taught the same principle regarding energies and personal power. It's important to keep an open mind. Wiccans or witches of today are not evil women who fly around on broomsticks, wear pointy black shoes and cast spells on random humans; theyre people like everyone else who follow their own denomination of religion, just like Christianity is broken up into several denominations. Chances are, you've met a Wiccan or have probably had one in your class without even knowing it. ~ In short, dont count on seeing too many women on brooms flying across the moon this Halloween. For more information on witches of the pastand present, Wiccatraditions and background information as well as detailed explanations of magick, visit: http:/Awww.controverscial.com/ index.htm. Happy Halloween! a different area. Experts then study the footage caught on tape from their journeys to determine whether the location is, indeed, haunted. As experts from the paranormal field, the team attempts different methods and experiments to try and communicate with the dead. The team is determined to prove the existence of life after death. This show often features the crew in pairs or as individuals while exploring each location. These explorations often end with members of the team screaming or running out of rooms. Most Haunted also has a sister show called Most Haunted Live and feature live, unedited recordings in front of a present audience. This year both shows will be featuring their episodes live on Halloween night. Viewers are encouraged to call or text-message their comments during the show. The ultimate quest for both teams is to prove the existence of ghosts or at least come close. However, many believe that both shows are faked and that the occurrences are dramatizations or can easily be explained. Whichever the case, Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted are set to prove to everyone that ghosts really exist.
