  • Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, | am writing to vent some of my feelings regarding our football game against Elon on October 6th. | had my folks in town, as did many other students, and | was hoping for an exciting game that would be a nice way to end Family Weekend. And | was not disappointed. The Catamounts came out and played a great game, but unfortunately we came up short, 38-36. However, my concern is not with the team, its with the fans. After a well-played first half, Western was down by only 5 points, with the score at 28-23. Then, with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Elon was sitting on a 15 point lead following a field goal and a touchdown, leading 38-23. Following this, my dad and | observed something the likes of which we'd never seen before: streams of people, lining up...to leave the stadium. With over 20 minutes left in the entire game, seemingly half of our fans (parents, alumni, students, etc.) filed out of the stadium just because it became a two possession ball game. Now | could understand if there were 8 minutes left in the entire game, and it was 40 degrees and raining (although even then theres still a decent shot). But with a quarter and a half to play on ES Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, _ It has com have occurred with issue 6). Please feel free to conta concerns. se Thank you for your t Sincerely, Margaret Hester Editor ste Pe a eS oe re a a er a mae Ree ot a picture perfect night? Pathetic. My dad and | both agreed that we had never seen such a lack of fan support, and honestly | felt a bit embarrassed. Now, there are a couple of things to consider. One, imagine yourself as a player. You're on the sidelines, disappointed while watching as your team falls behind two scores but still knowing theres plenty of time to get things together. Suddenly you look on the other side of the field and you see a huge line of Western fans anxiously waiting to be able to exit the stadium. What does that do for your morale? What kind of respect does this show to your hard work and dedication? Does that make you more pumped and want to try to win the game? No, it doesn't. It seems our players would become deflated and disappointed at the lack of support being shown by our so-called fans at a very important SoCon game. Luckily, this was not the case. One other thing to consider is that there could have very well been a high school senior in our stadium that night being recruited by our coaches. Let's say hes a very talented young man and loves the campus, coaches, players, etc. But what is this recruit going to think when he il a ie de ce aaa eB ee a ae ee. ce, Be a. Baa a a en ee a 5 a ~~ oe sees the type of fan support at Western? Hes going to think Maybe | should visit App, Furman, or Elon. Hey, at least their fans wouldn't bail at the drop of a hat. And thank God he wasnt on campus for the PC game when our students literally chanted AGAINST our players. | realize that most of the people who leave during halftime are all the people who didnt get drunk enough at the tailgate party, so they have to go home early enough to get hammered before midnight and don't really care about our football team in the first place. But what ever happened to school spirit? Supporting your team, and most importantly, your fellow classmates? As | said, obviously we didn't win, but we played one heck of a game and our guys came back and almost pulled out the victory. There was still a decent fan turnout after the mass exit, and what fans were left did a good job, forcing the Elon QB to burna timeout or 2. But | still feel like our players deserve more. And while this may seem like a non-issue to most people, | still feel strongly about it. If we dont support our team, it reflects badly on our school and our fans. So why aren't we Loud, Proud and Purple? | know | am. Sincerely, Alex Montgomery BESS Ta oS ee ee eee ene
