Pick Up Where They Left Off: Dominating as By. Ryan Sarda WCnewsmagazine = Playing away from home is always a tough transition for any team. However the WCU Lady Cats are making their three game road trip look easy. Just two days removed from their overtime victory at Chattanooga, the Catamounts returned to the road and traveled to Statesboro, Georgia. The Catamounts hit the hardwood once again to battle the Eagles of Georgia Southern. Like Appalachian State and Chattanooga, the Eagles put in a valiant effort against WCU, but it was not enough. In the end, it was Kellie Harpers Catamounts who stood strong with 73- 68 victory against the Eagles. The victory put the Cats at 5&2 in the Southern Conference, and also put them back into the running for first place. Junior guard Ashley Pellom helped the Cats win their third consecutive game with 15 points. She was one of four Catamounts who finished the game in double figures. Helping Pellom was sophomore Brooke Johnson with 13. points, junior Monique Dawson with 12, and sophomore Lauren Powell with 10. After the Catamounts witnessed their 15 point deficit suddenly vanish, the game became a nail biter. The Catamounts took a 56-41 lead with 9:55 remaining in the game. The Eagles would not go away as they.went on a 24-to-8 over a seven minute span. With 2:35 remaining in the ballgame, the Eagles took a one point edge in the scoreboard leading 65-64. This was their first lead since early in the first half when the Eagles led 2-0. , Tiffany Brown of the Eagles turned the ball _ over for her squad as Chevon Keith came away with a key steal for the Catamounts. The ball wound up in the hands of Jessika Johnson who was fouled. Johnson hit two in a row and made the scoreboard read 68-65. From that point on, the Catamounts never looked back and nailed seven of their final eight free-throws to put the Eagles away for good. Following two close road victories against Chattanooga and Georgia Southern, the Catamounts three game road trip continued with one final stop in Greenville South Carolina where they would take on the Furman Paladins. Despite shooting 33 percent from the field, the Catamounts were able to come away with their fourth consecutive victory holding off Furman 58-47. The scoring in the game belonged to sophomore: guard Lauren Powell who just missed a career high with a total of 21 points. Powell shot 10-of-18 from. the field and hit the only three-point bucket of the entire game for her team. Powell. also added five boards and three assists to her afternoon. The only other Catamount in double figures was sophomore Brooks Johnson who finished with 10 points and five rebounds. The game started off with both teams evenly matched. There were seven ties in the first half including a 20-20 score with five minutes left to play. Powell scored five straight points to give the Cats a 25-20 advantage, which would be the largest lead of the first half for Western. The Cats and the Paladins headed into the locker room with Western holding a 30-25 advantage in the contest. In the second half, the Catamounts were able to increase the lead to double digits with the score being 42-31 with 10:59 left to play. A late rally by the Paladins cut the Catamount lead to five, but the Cats scored seven consecutive points and took their largest lead in the game with 12. In the final minute, Furman was able to cut the deficit to seven, 54-47, but Brooke Johnson and freshman Heather Swayne each hit a pair of free throws to put the nail in the coffin. The key to the Catamounts 58-47 victory was not just the shooting stroke of Powell, it was also the rebounding. The Cats out-rebounded Furman 45-35, and the team finished with a total Brooke Johnson of 21 offensive boards. The Cats (12&7, 6&2 SoCon) look to continue their 2007 success and remain at the top of the Southern Conference standings. The last time the Catamounts won four straight games, was in the 2004-2005 Southern Conference Tournament where they brought the Conference Championship home to the Whee, and headed into the NCAA Tournament.
