Being a one-hundred-level class, | could understand why it was so packed. Now my largest class has at most twenty-five, while my smallest class ranges around twelve. But with the new plans to expand _the campus, | wonder what this will do to the class size and other problem areas for Western. ! If the enrollment rate explodes the way that is expected, then the campus will be spilling over to the other side of NC 107. In order for the campus fo still Keep the ideal class size around twenty-five, the staff size also will be growing. Though a larger campus means more jobs, it seems that things will become more chaotic. Small class sizes is one of the main reasons that | decided Western was the place for me. | didnt want to be just another name on a list or another warm body in a seat. | wanted to be known by my professors and fellow class mates. Just in the few years that | have been attending Western, | have noticed a sizeable difference in the campus population. At present, the campus size is approximately 8,665 students with the student/faculty Commentary by Keri Dixon * WCnewsmagazine Western is fast becoming known for its advances in technology. The campus grows and expands every day, and with it, new technology is brought in. This new technology goes into the classrooms, as well as new state-of-the- art facilities, like the Fine and Performing Arts Center. The school is making sure that every student has access to the technology needed in todays world. They require students to purchase computers, and this requirement could soon change to require students to own laptops. With all of these changes, the question becomes, how much is too much technology in the classroom? First, there is the cell phone. It is the professor's worst nightmare, yet no college student would be complete without one. Many professors have made rules in their syllabus that prohibits their use completely in the classroom. The penalty for having a cell phone in class; it gets taken away. Are professors right to do that? Cell phones are great for emergencies. And students should be allowed to have their cell phones with them if it means they can remain connected to the outside world. That connection lesternGarolinian Since | came to Western about three ratio about 14 to 1. But as the prestige of the Campus rises, so will the enrollment. Even with new professors, it doesnt seem possible that the campus will be able to maintain its small class sizes. The first problem that comes to mind is registering for classes during the semester. Though there would be more staff members to accommodate the larger student body, the Internet problems would be worse than they already are. Its not uncommon for the Internet to crash during registration time because of all the extra traffic. Registration time can be one of the is especially important for students with children. Those students need to be reached at a moment's notice. For that reason alone, cell phones should never be banned from the classroom. But students should be aware that unruly use of the cell phone in class isn't polite either. Ring tones going off in class is distracting and can distract the both the professor and the students. There is no reason, unless it is an emergency, for students to be using the phone in class. But Dr. Cruz, a professor in the History Department, points out that sometimes students just need something in their hands to keep their attention. Like doodling on paper, texting during class helps some students keep their attention focused. There is a little kid in all of us. And you have to keep it entertained so the rest of your mind can work on the important stuff. While it may be very rude, the cell phone could very well become the new doodling pad. But remember, be respectful, and dont distract others. Along with the cell phone craze, there are laptops. Western Carolina has been pushing for students to get laptops. The school now offers most irritating and stressful times of the semester for any student. Another problem would be how to feed such a large number of new people. As of now, the campus has three main eating areas: Brown, Dodson and the UC. The traffic that comes through these areas during main eating hours can be scary. The UC tends to get some of the worst lines and over-crowding. If the campus wants to keep up with the student appetite, it would have to build at least two more eating places. Finally, there would be a problem with tuition. Just in the past few years, the enrollment fee has started to climb. The money to pay for the new professors, dorms, eating facilities and classrooms will be a heavy burden on the campus. Thankfully, Western offers the rental program for books, even though some must be bought, that makes the cost of classes a little more affordable. There are many great things that come with a larger campus that might not have been possible with a smaller campus: more activities, new majors and events. Western has been through many changes since it first opened in 1889. | can only hope that the campus doesnt change what makes Western unique from other larger universities. Technology Taking Advantage in the Classroom? wireless internet in most places on campus, classrooms included. Can this technology be used for good? Yes it can. Many people have commented on how convenient it is to have computers that students can have access to during class. They help to spur conversation because facts can be quickly looked up online during class. Yet some people are looking to take measures that would prohibit the use of laptops and computers during class time. By doing that, they would be taking away a valuable tool that could be used for learning. As long as students aren't disrupting class, they should be able to keep their laptop and their internet access in class. Students are more likely to be successful when they are given the technology to help them expand. Dont limit what students can have to learn by, expand it. When it comes to bringing technology into the classroom, | say; as long as it doesnt disrupt other students, bring it on. Special thanks to Doctor Cruz.
