  • Keeping Up with the Jones: WCU's. attempt to make its mark i in the university system with the Millennial Cam By Katie Rath WCnewsmagazine Students, professors, eis lend me your ears! And while you're at it, if you have shovels, lend me those, too. Because from this point until! who knows when, we will be simultaneously digging dirt and shoveling ourselves out of this crap under which the school is burying us. For the past six years, WCU has been trying to get approval for and plan this illustrious. knowledge center called the Millennial Campus. | Because the majority of students are not familiar with this project, as the school has kept it a little hush-hush, let me give you some information. The legislation for the Millennium Initiative, passed in July 2000, permits the university to acquire nearby land, tear everything down, and build an educational center that allows students and professors to learn, experience, and live in an environment dedicated to one certain area of research. The concept of millennial campuses is becoming increasingly popular for NC public universities. A press release posted by the WCU public relations department says that the millennium campus trend is focused on enabling campuses of the state university system to redesign education and research efforts to include faculty spin-off companies, real- world experience for students, and closer ties to the industries that translate research into quality- of-life improvements for the public. | In other words, the purpose of the Millennial Campus is to provide a focus center where students can eat, sleep, live and breathe their area of study. And when their educational study is complete, hopefully an interested bs he sini stain aneiiniensl nadaiidiiaiantinnenmaen.. corporation, drawn to the area because of their interest in research opportunities, will provide jobs for these trained students, allowing them to Stay in the mountains instead of moving to a big city to find a job. It almost sounds great, but lets look a little deeper. Based on WCUs._ nationally- recognized entrepreneurship, criminal justice, and emergency medical programs, one would imagine our new research areas to be dedicated to the most popular majors. This is not necessarily _so. The first neighborhood will be the School of Health and Gerontological Sciences, which focuses on retirement, aging, and health. So wait, you're telling me WCU is spending $34.8 million to study the dynamics of an old folks home? Don't get me wrong, | believe our elders have a lot to teach us, but | just dont see the merit in providing a learning community for something | had no idea anyone was even studying at this school. Are we even studying this stuff at this school? The second neighborhood makes a little more sense to me- the new School of Education. Founded in 1889, WCU, then-named Cullowhee High School, was intended to educate and train teachers for the community. Currently, our teaching program is known as one of the best in the nation. I'm a little more in favor of spending $34 million on this area of study. But the more and more | consider this endeavor, the less and less it matters which areas of study will be provided for in the buildings. | want to know why we're building in the first place. The school claims they want to take steps to wrong. pus_ COMMENTARY providing our own little Research Triangle Park, | that they want to expand our learning potential and give us the opportunity to get down and dirty with our majors. And they want to be able to bring in corporate support to hire us when we graduate sO we never have to leave the Valley in order to geta good job. | wonder how the community feels about this. Im not sure how you feel, but | was excited. to hear that | would be a little farther away from the big cities when | came to WCU. Are the locals behind this decision to. bring in more corporate support? Im venturing that there isnt as much support as you would think. | discussed the Millennial Campus plan with a number of my local friends, and no one was pleased to hear their small-town lifestyle will soon be disrupted by the big business initiative. The school says heres the chance of a. lifetime for students. | say it's their effort to prove WCU is just as good as any larger, better-funded, higher-ranker NC public university. | thought we were a little more secure with ourselves, honestly. | thought we were okay with being a medium-sized public university, nestled into the beautiful mountains we call home. | thought we - were confident in and proud of our accreditations, our new programs, and the increase in student involvement. And because | have yet to see our Campus void of any construction equipment, | thought soon we would be done tearing down things for a while too. But you might as well consider the orange traffic barrel to be the new NC state pene because apparently | thought Like the shins graduated students wae will soon be, WCU is trying to make its way through a dark and treacherous world that. _ focuses on achievements in life rather of: quality _ of life. 1 simply do not support that: trade-off. Instead of tearing down a mountain and buying Bobs Mini Mart, why dont we spend the money on a campus-wide recycling program? Why dont we build a parking deck for the growing student population? Why dont we provide more money for Health Services? Why dont we engage in a wide-scale campus and river clean-up? Why dont we provide more funding for scholarships? Why don't we give our amazing professors and staff Salary raises? | dont discount the fact that this Millennial Campus will probably bring in business potential for years to come. All Im asking is; could the Millennium Initiative be WCUs attempt to keep up with the research center trend so we can look better in the eyes of other schools instead of focusing on how we can be better for ourselves? pIagxa NUTLSaM
