  • [LETTER TO THE EDITOR My fianc, Joe, and | were in the Asheville mall with my best friend and, her husband this past weekend. Joe recently bought a new outfit which consists of a riding jacket, a vest, and a cowboy hat. So, we went to the mall, and Joe had taken his hat off. He just had on his jacket and vest with a button up shirt and a pair of Carhart pants. Of course these were all black (he loves tombstone and Johnny Cash). We had been in the mall for three or four hours, shopping, and had just bought about $150.00 of stuff at hot topic which we had taken to the car. We were tired of walking and my friend and her husband were in a store. Joe and | decided to go find a bench to sit on which we waited. Being that we didn't know where the closest one was, we asked a police officer, Luke Bigelow. The conversation went lke this: Joe: Excuse me sir, can you tell me where the sitting benches are? Bigelow: They are all over the mall, but since you approached me, can | talk to you about something? Joe: sure. Bigelow: Why would you come to the mall wearing something like this? points at Joe's outfit (Joe was stunned) Do you not realize that dressing like this scares the public because of what happened at Columbine? Joe: Sir, this is westem wear, a riding jacket, not a trench coat, and you are free to search me if you would like, | dont have anything. opens coat Bigelow: The boys from columbine wore stuff like this, and you should know better than to wear it out in public, you shouldn't have worn this to the mall, you need to know that because you are dressed like this; you are considered a threat and will be watched closely. Joe: Sir, | am not a threat, I'm a cowboy, | have not threatened anyone, nor have | done anything wrong, | go out to Western Carolina University and was in the Criminal Justice department. Bigelow: if you go out to Western then you should have been intelligent enough not to dress like this, this scares People. Joe: | have not had anyone tell me that I frighten them. Bigelow: Well, they aren't going to do that, now are they? At this point I told the man thank you and pulled Joe away. His attitude, the tone of his voice, the look on his face, and even some of his words were incredibly offensive and rude. Joe and | walked over to a bench and sat down, the officer walked off. When Joe and I sat down, we started talking about how rude he was and how we should have gotten his badge number to turn him in, We have never been spoken to like that before. A litt later, my friend and her husband returned, and we told them what happened. We were talking, when Bigelow returned. He Said that he wasn't a mall security officer, that in fact he was an officer with the Asheville police department and that someone had told him that Joe had threatened to get even with him. Joe and | were outraged at this. He told us to follow him, and was incredibly rude to me when | told him that all we had said was that we wanted his badge number, which is not against the law. We followed him, Joe expressing how offended he was that this was happening and trying to once again explain that he wasn't a threat and what he was wearing was western gear, not some plan to imitate the idiots from columbine. He took us outside the mall and showed us a sign that stated numerous rules and pointed to number 12, saying that Joe was violating it. This is what it said: 12. Displaying or wearing any item which depicts sexually explicit activity, gal activity or obscene or offensive language, wearing clothing or lack Of clothing that is likely to create a disturbance or embroil others in open Conflict or that offends community standards of decency, or that impinges on the sensitivities of others in the mall He said it was mostly the part offends community standards of WesternCarolinian Complaint against the Asheville Mall decency. He then proceeded to run background checks on both myself and Joe. While Joe was stil trying to make the officer see that what he was wearing was not horrible, that in fact there were plenty of people walking around the mall with worse on, | called my mom. As | was talking to my mom he very rudely told me to get off the phone so he could talk to both of us since | "had to be so involved in the situation. Joe's phone started ringing and we were trying to find it. When Joe reached in his Jeans pocket (which was very tight) to get his phone, Bigelow put hand on his gun. He actually acted like Joe was going to pull a gun out Of that incredibly tight pocket and | guess the gun was ringing too. After having incredibly offended us and having been incredibly rude to us, the background check came back and told him that we were totally clean. This is when he started sucking up because he realized that he had Screwed up. He introduced the head of mail security and said that he would decide if we stayed at the mall or not. This man said that we were not a threat and he didn't see Joe as one, that he was very polite and that he was clean. Both men admitted that if Joe had worn his hat, this wouldn't have happened. (So evidently you can get away with wearing western gear if you have the hat, but not if you don't. | guess they don't think someone wearing a cowboy hat could have a gun on them, but by God, someone who doesn't could). They also said that if middle eastern guy came in with a back pack, or an African American Wearing bagay clothes and lots of chains came in, this would happen to them as well. While they were so busy telling Joe that he was dressed offensively two mothers walked out with their children. One was holding the child by their arms (and the child looked as if it were about to drop out of the mothers grasp), and another one came out with their child trailing behind them with no pants on. if anyone should have been getting talked too about the way they were dressed or acting, it was those women who were not taking care of their children, not Joe who had just politely asked a police officer (who is supposed to help you, not iscriminate against you) where a bench was! Joe is planning on becoming a police officer and has many family members who are police officers; | too have family who are police officers. We have NEVER been treated so badly before by someone Who we believed could be trusted. We told Bigelow that just by having Pulled us out of the mall and yelling at us the way that he did, the people who drove by, or walked by, and saw the way we were being spoken to, most likely believed we had actually done something wrong, which we hadn't, and therefore was furthering the stereotype that every person who dresses in black is going to try to kill you or blow something up. Joe and | are both Christians, serious students, and people who look out for others, and we were being treated as though we were Satan worshiping dangerous criminals who were out to bomb Asheville mall. After realizing their mistake and sucking up to Joe, they told us we could return to the mall, and asked us to please continue to shop and buy things from the mall. We told them no thank you and went to our car. We will not be returning to the mall, they will no longer get any of our money, and we are sending this story to all of the local papers. In the end, we did get his badge number and we willbe filing a complaint against him with the Asheville police department. This is just a warning to all, don't wear black to the mall, or you will offend someone and get pulled out of the mall like some criminal Sincerely, The offensively dressed cowboy's fiance (Janie Harrington)
