  • ACTIVITIES BEGIN! Pros and cons of living off campus By Carrie Petrea + WCnewsmagazine With new apartment complexes popping up every few minutes, many students are considering alternate forms of housing other than the traditional dorm room. But, should you take that huge step into the world of rent and bills? The following is a list of pros and cons of living off campus: Pros: + Itcan be a lot cheaper than living in the dorms, depending on the apartment complex + You can cook whenever you want to, and you aren't forced to buy a meal plan + Awasher/dryer is usually included in the apartment, so you don'thave to fight to do your laundry + Neighbors are usually more considerate of noise levels. And if they aren't, you can have them evicted + No more health inspections. You can have your room as messy as you'd like + Private apartments are more conducive for studying + Having a rental history will make it easier to find a place to live after graduation + You don't have to share bathrooms with fifty other people + Ifyou aren't careful, your bills can pile up and cause you to have debt before you graduate + Parking can be an issue in some apartment complexes + Parking in commuter lots can definitely be a problem 23 , WCnewsmagazine + Ittcan be inconvenient when your classes are spaced far apart + Many times, apartment complexes are nothing more than glorified dormitories + You may stil have roommates you just can't get along with + You're more isolated from campus and other students + You don't have cleaning services + Leases sometimes run through summer months, and if you aren't staying over the summer, you'll have to sublease your apartment or ay the rent anyway, which can be a royal pain + Sometimes landlords can be stricter than RAS If you decide the pros outweigh the cons and choose to plunge right into apartment hunting, make sure you consider rent and what it includes. Sure, $175 a month sounds fantastic, but is it fully furnished? If not, do you have the means to furnish it? Does the price include utlties, washer/dryer, internet, cable or phone? Is it close to campus? Is parking going to be an issue? How many roommates wil you have? Do you know your future roommates? Is the environment safe and secure? {s your landlord flexible in fixing broken appliances? These questions may seem a bit much, but be sure you discuss them with your future landlord. Before signing a lease, read the fine print carefully and make sure you actually see the apartment. Shop around before setting on one apartment; sometimes if you wait, you can get a better deal, And if you decide these things are just too much to handle, there's no shame in staying on campus. Many people do throughout the summer: Hike off the Blue Ridge Parkway o1 Smokies Check out Smilefest at Lake Toxaway June 1-2 Check out Bele Chere in Asheville July 28-30 -Hike the trail at Whitewater Falls (its the highest waterfall east of the Rockies, and close to weul) : -Hike a portion of the AT -See the play Unto These Hills in Cherokee -Hang out at Rast LeBorte |
