  • Disc golf taking flight at Western Carolina Univer: With Spring just around the comer, students, faculty and staff at Western Carolina University might have a new recreational activity to Participate in soon: disc goff. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, only instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you throw a disc into an elevated metal basket. Ultimately, the putt is tossed into the basket and the hole is completed. The goal of disc golf is the same as traditional golf: to complete the course in the fewest number of shots. Disc golf (also referred to as Frisbee golf) is a fun, inexpensive, safe, healthy and environment-friendly game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, said Dr. Justin Menickelli, Assistant Professor in Health and Human Performance at Western and member of the Disc Golf Course Development Committee, Dr. Menickelil is just one of 11 members of the committee, Which includes other members of the HHP department, Intramurals department, community members, graduate students, and undergraduate students of the Parks & Recreation Majors and Physical Education Majors clubs, as well as a certified Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Course Designer. According to data published by the WCU Health Center, 45% of students are overweight or obese, 28% do not exercise at all, and 34% exercise only 1-2 days a week. Disc goff is a low-intensity sport that harkens back to the day when people went for a walk in the park and tossed a Frisbee around, golf has low capital and maintenance costs, is environmentally friendly, canbe played year- round in all climates and is enjoyed immediately even by beginners. The only equipment needed is a disc (or Frisbee) which costs around $8 and can be used ) over and over again. Disc golf is @ uniquely environment-friendly sport.
