  • 24 | WCnewsmagazine Mountain Conference claim titles By Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine Another flag football season has passed, and the champions have been crowned. With as many teams as were signed up this year, it seemed like everyone on campus was involved at some point in time with the fall semester's. perennial favorite event. Competition heated up as the weather cooled down, and both champions gave standout performances. This year's coed flag football title went to Hooterville. Completing an undefeated regular season, Hooterville continued the trend in the playoffs. A tight game was drawn for the championship, but key plays made the difference this year. Hootervilles pass rush came up with a pair of sacks that forced difficult decisions on their opposition, Pain and Torture. With pressure on the ensuing plays, Hooterville broke up a pass for the turnover on downs with one of the series and forced an interception on the other. Capitalizing on the interception was the exclamation point for the game, leading Hooterville to an undefeated season and to the All-Campus Title. Perennial powerhouse Smokey Mountain Conference (SMC) continued their reign as All-Campus Champions for yet another year. For several years now, SMC has been the established team to beat, and this years challenger was no new face. Once again, the Black Knights faced off against SMC, marking the third time in four years. SMC had an impressive showing through Flag Football Championships: Hooterville and Smokey the playofts, allowing no points scored against them. Starting the game, both teams looked evenly matched. Both broke up key pass plays, committed crucial sacks and flawlessly prevented each other from scoring. Seeing aneed for change, SMC converted from pass-heavy play to short dump passes with lateral streakers, optioning the ball at the last moment at any position on the field. This led to the first and only score of the first half. Inthe second half, SMC capitalized on halftime adjustments, and after some key receptions for short yardage and a pair of runs, courtesy of missed tackles, SMC increased their lead to 12-0. But the Black Knights caught a break when a controversy on a short run led to their first score. Officials deemed that the Black Knight rusher's was not pulled off but merely fell off, requiring SMC to tag him with two hands. After failing to do so, the runner proceeded to score. Turnovers proved critical the remainder of the game, as the score remained stagnant, and the game ended, knotted at 12-6. SMC maintained control of their title and gamered the opportunity to play in the ACIS flag football ch. npionships in Wilmington with some aid courtesy of the Intramurals Department.
