  • ~ $tarted from the Elon 29-yard line after a 28-yard punt return == by Francis Brown, The Cats threw an incompletion on the first as WCUs defense held the Phoenix to three plays and out. With the ball back two minutes into the second half, the Cats looked to put some more points on the board as they down but a pass interference penalty pushed the ball ahead to the Elon 15-yard line. The Cats gave the ball to Lamont Reid from there as Reid carried the ball 5 times for 13 yards to push the ball to the Phoenix one. John Bush carried the ball in. from there to:make the score 31-10. Neither team scored for the rest of the third quarter. With their backs against the wall, Elon started off-from their one-yard line after a punt by Tim Mayse. Three straight runs by Reggie Hall garnered 17 yards and pushed the ball to the.Elon 18-yard line to end the third quarter. Down by 21 with one quarter left, the Phoenix went to the air to begin the fourth.. - Kye Hamilton completed two straight passes for 16 yards as he found Bo Williamson for 11 yards and Michael Mayers for five. WCU received a 15-yard personal-foul call that pushed the ball even further down field to the 50 yard-line. Hall carried the ball two. straight times from there for 18 yards. After a Hamilton incompletion, Hall had another carry, this time for five more . yards. WCUs defense bowed up from there and stopped the Phoenix on the next three plays to force a field goal. Andrew Wilcox hit a 42-yard field goal to make the score 31-13 with 9:25 left in the game. Western started off their next drive with a 3-yard carry by Darius Fudge, but on second down Justin Clark was sacked for 9 yards. Clark found Michael Hines on third down to get those nine yards back. With 4"-and-7, the Cats were forced to punt the ball, but the punt was blocked by Daronce Daniels. Chris Bland recovered the ball on the 10-yard line and ran it in for a touchdown to cut the Western lead to 31-20. John Bush fumbled on the first play of the next Catamount drive, and it looked like Elon was win the game, but Carlton Bailey intercepted Kye next play at the WCU 12- yard line. Elons defense stopped Western once again, though, as they held the Catamounts to three plays and:out. With 4:58 left . in the game, the Phoenix started the drive on their 40-yard line. After an incomplete pass, Kevin Bailey gained 6 yards on the ground but another incompletion brought up 4"-and-4. After the completion to Mayers, a personal foul on WCU pushed the ball to the : Catamount 20. Hamilton found Reggie Hall for 8 more yards before finding pay- dirt with a 12-yard pass to Casey Hall. The two-point conversion failed, and the score was now Western 31, Elon 26. The Phoenix were right on the verge of : ruining Homecoming Weekend. 29 WCU was held to three plays and out once again, but this time they took up 2 minutes and 10 seconds with their drive to leave Elon only 28 seconds to win the game. It looked like Elon would actually do it,as' Hamilton found Mayers for 15 yards on first down to push the ball to the CatamaGnt 45-yard line. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, the Phoenix went to the air again, but this time Hamilton could not complete the pass to Mayers. On 3% down, Hamilton would once again miss Mayers. With one last gasp, Hamilton once again threw an incompletion to end the game and give Western the 31 -26 win. Leading Western offensively were tailbacks Darius Fudge, Lamont Reid, Mike Malone and quarterback Justin Clark. Fudge finished the game with 14 carries for 105 yards rushing and a touchdown. Reid had 9 carries for 63 yards, while Clark completed 10 of 18 passes for 108 and a touchdown and for the second week in a row did not throw any interceptions. Malone did all his damage on kick returns as he had 170 kick return yards and one touchdown. The Catamount defensive effort was led by linebacker James Conklin. Conklin finished the game with 12 tackles. Also having strong games defensively were Felipe Foster and Rico Reese. Foster had 8 tackles, including one and a half tackles for a loss, while Reese had 7 tackles. Carlton Bailey played well for the second week in a row as he had 6 tackles and an interception. ~ What was looking like a blowout by Western turned into a very close game, but luckily Western held on for the victory. With the victory, Western improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Scene on oy the 5-3 Wofford Terriers Saturday, November 5, at 2:00.
