  • - Coed 2-on-2 Basketball Water Polo Playoffs: Sigma Phi Epsilon vs. Kind of a Big Deal BSU vs.Yahtzee By Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine Water polo playoffs kicked off the third week of October and from the beginning, did not disappoint. Two match-ups led to a changing of guard in whos who in WCU intramural water polo. Sigma Phi Epsilon, last years champion and perennial favorite, took to the pool against Kind of a Big Deal, a team thats been making a lot of noise in every sport they've contested this year, as well as being atop the leader board for the All-Campus team title. Kind of a Big Deal beat Sigma Chi by forfeit in the play-in game to get the opportunity to play Sigma Phi Epsilon. The game to follow pitted last years runner-up, Yahtzee, against the Baptist Student Union. The Sig Eps came out with large numbers of subs for the game, as well as a deep cheering base. Not to be outdone, Kind of a Big Deal bolstered a rowdy fan base for support. The first half was brutal but with relatively low scores. Both teams focused on ball movement, but the intensity in the water didnt prevent turnovers and dunkings of pass receivers. With such game play, Sigma Phi Epsilon did manage to enter half-time one goal up. In the second half, there was more focus on scoring as the teams took shots from further out than they had been before. As fatigue set in from treading water for 10 minutes, scoring opportunities came up more regularly, and Kind of a Big Deal capitalized first and second, putting them up by a goal. With the clock winding down just under a minute, the Sig Eps caught a tired defense for a game-tying goal. Shortly after, time expired, and after 20 minutes, the contest remained knotted. Therefore, a sudden death, golden goal opportunity presented itself for the first round playoff win. To start the overtime period, Kind of a Big Deal sprinted out and obtained first possession of the ball. A shot from the Big Deal attacker caromed off a defender, out of the pool, hitting a wall and dropping in on the other flank of the pool. Kind of a Big Deals attacker beat the Sig Ep defender to the ball, but he was quickly put under and forced to surrender the ball. Coming up from the water, the attacker stole the ball from the unsuspecting defender and immediately shot on goal, scoring. The goal was all that was needed in the sudden death contest to claim the win for Kind of a Big Deal over two-time defending champion Sigma Phi Epsilon. In the second game, Yahtzee played BSU. Off the starting whistle, Yahtzee capitalized on a sleeping BSU team, and with the first shot of the game, the Yahtzee attacker scored. This was a flash of opportunity for Yahtzee, but that spark soon faded. Penalties for use of two hands to catch passes and for dunking players without the ball forced Yahtzee to lose players to the sideline throughout the half, while BSU capitalized from the power play situations, leading at the half by five goals to Yahtzees two. : The second half was the same for Yahtzee, fielding penalty after penalty, and having BSU capitalize time and time again. Despite being down men, Yahtzee held its own on scoring opportunities, but they were constantly knocked down from an unthwarted BSU defense and goal keeper. Yahtzee one shot find its way in, but it was too late for a comeback. The game ended with a commanding BSU lead in the score, seeing off last years runner-up in the championships by a score of 14-6. After one night of water polo matches, last years championship teams were out and two new ones were in. BSU was then slated to play Kind of a Big Deal for the title game the next week.
