  • 18 | WCnewsmagazine Feeling Stressed? By Russell Conover * WCnewsmagazine Feeling stressed? Dont despair; that makes you (a) a regular human being, and (b) an ordinary college student. Stress is a normal part of life, unfortunately, but there are ways to overcome the pressure you feel and become more content with life. Consider the following: *__Take deep breaths. It has been scientifically proven that breathing deeply in and out reduces the stress a person feels. By closing your eyes and focusing on taking slow, deep breaths, you can escape your stress (even if its only temporarily) and recognize the satisfying feeling of air flowing through your body. Breathing is something almost everyone takes for granted, but doing it in a steady, rhythmic manner is extremely beneficial to managing stress. _Go for a walk. Getting fresh air and exercising are two proven ways to conquer stress. By removing yourself from a stressful setting, the world around you seems a lot more appealing. Plus, the body always benefits from a nice, steady walk (especially in the crisp fall air). Exercise is essential for the well-being of the human body, and its not at all difficult to take a walk (even if it only lasts ten or fifteen minutes) to get your blood pumping and to get your body and mind feeling stronger again. * Go on a road trip. Sometimes the best way to escape your stress is just to get away from it altogether. Your trip can be as simple as a drive to Wal-Mart or into nearby towns such as Sylva, Dillsboro or Franklin. But if time permits and you really need to escape, take a longer drive to Asheville, other parts of North Carolina or neighboring states. Road trips provide a change of scenery that is always beneficial, and the trips almost always allow you to forget about whatever was troubling you (for a while). Also, taking a trip with people you know provides an opportunity to focus on laughing and having fun rather than on the things that cause you stress. Take a rest. Stress often comes from the fact that you're not sleeping enough. College students, on average, do not get the eight hours of sleep per night that are recommended by doctors for healthy living. Simply lying down in bed or relaxing in a comfortable chair are surefire ways to strengthen your body and feel better about what's bothering you. * Remember things youre thankful for. It's also important to remember the big picture in life. Things will always happen that get on your nerves, and theres nothing you can do about it. But remembering things you're thankful for (such as your health, your family and friends, and the fact that youre in school in the first place) can help you realize that smaller annoyances are just that-annoyancesand nothing that will harm you seriously in the long run. It should be noted that there is no single cure-all for relieving stress, but often, stress is only as bad as you make it out to be. By trying some of the suggestions above, hopefully you'll find that life doesnt seem so full of pressure and that you are able to get through anything.
