  • Banned books By Dr. Laura Cruz Contributing Writer The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights states, CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW...Abridging the freedom of speech; or of the press. On September 24" through October _ | 1 of this year, Western Carolina University observed Banned Books Week, celebrating free speech in the printed word. Dr. Laura Cruz and Dr. Mike Paul, professors in WCUs history department, Hunter Library, and students teamed up to give a reading of banned works. The program started with an opening by Brandon Robinson, speaking of the need to allow freedom of speech within the written word. The program had two guest speakers, distinguised authors Ron Rash and Charles F. Price, who also spent time talking about the need for an author to have freedom to write the characters as they truly are instead of worrying about . being banned or having parts of their books being edited out. History students of WCU even read aloud from books that have been banned all over the world. These students included Jonathan Bell, Kelly Grantham, Christian Jenson, Kendra Johnson, Elizabeth Montgomery, Ave Ovil, Zachary Phillips and Corey Tripp. At the end of the program, the authors and the students answered questions from the __audience. haunted. Restaurant Review Bogarts By Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine Like its counterpart in Waynesville, Bogarts of Sylva has a wide variety of steaks, burgers, sandwiches, salads and nightly specials to keep each experience interesting. Located on West Main Street, Sylva, in the building that used to house Grandmas Pancake Barn, Bogarts has been successful in entertaining guests since the day of opening. Bogarts offers the best of fine dining mixed with a little Southern style. Each salad has its own unique signature, whether its pecans and honey mustard tossed lettuce or rolled turkey and ham, that give a generous portion to maximize the bang for your buck. Small selections of salad dressings are made in-store, and their quality shows through. The entre menu is comprised of a selection of sandwiches and hamburgers, each with a distinctive flavor and combo. Of these, Bogarts even does its own rendition of classics such as the New York Reuben, using sour cream instead of thousand island dressing. Dessert is another realm for Bogarts. Key lime pie and strawberry shortcake are for lighter tastes, but others may tempt the taste buds to go deeper. An Oreo encrusted brownie served with ice cream and whipped cream is rather rich, but it still doesnt hold a candle to the house specialty, deep fried Oreos. These Oreos, deep fried in pancake batter and served with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and a dusting of confectioners sugar are a sight to behold, but even more so, something that keeps people coming back. Not to be outdone, Bogarts has a wide variety of beers and a small selection of wines. The bar area caters to , guests just stopping by and provides a trio of televisions for patrons. Anything on the menu can be ordered to-go if desired.
