  • From Spare Change to Hip-Hop, WCU Aids Katrina Victims By Jennifer Scism_ * WCnewsmagazine By now everyone has heard about the devastation that Hurricane Katrina has caused for our neighbors in the Deep South. Many organizations are scrambling to find things they can do in order to help with the many problems faced in the storms aftermath. The effects we as a region have directly felt were the worries over loved ones located in the areas hit and the surge in gasoline prices. However, it is a disgrace for us as Americans to watch the devastation on TV and still do nothing. It is our responsibility to step up to the plate and make a difference. Quite frankly there is NO excuse not to! What are Westerns students, faculty and staff doing to help the Katrina victims? A variety of things! Various student organizations have taken up money for relief efforts; donations are being made this week to various relief organizations. Friday, at the Town Hall Meeting concerning Katrina, there was even a challenge made to WCU and the other North Carolina colleges, to take in and house 10 to 12 families struck by Katrinas wrath. Plans of an Alternative Spring Break to New Orleans are underway by LMP. All projects to help raise money and provide aid can be found on the university website. The Service Learning Department and the Public Relations Department, provide these listings for all to see. On Friday September 30" there are plans to host a hip-hop show at Mama Goldbergs. All the proceeds will go to a group of WCU students who are taking it upon themselves to travel to Mississippi during fall break. There will be a $5 entry fee at the door. The show will be complete with a live DJ (turntables and all), and Cullowhees own SE7EN and SHORESHOT, also known as S7. This hip-hop duo performed at Valley Ballyhoo and was a smash hit according to their audience.
