  • s3asebali Recap WCU Baseball Season Ends With 11-4 Loss to #20 College of Charleston Catamounts End Season With a 33-23 Record WCU OPI RELEASE The top seed in the 2005 Southern: Conference Tour- -nament and 20th-ranked College of Charleston Cougars scored seven runs in the first and traded four runs the rest of the way to claim an 11-4 victory over third seed Western Carolina at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The College of Charleston (46-12) sent 11 men to the plate in scoring its seven runs in the bottom of the first. Brett Gardner had a leadoff walk and Byron Barber drew a one out walk, setting up an RBI single by Chris Campbell. Two more singles loaded the bases and Brett Anderson had an RBI infield single and Brian Hastings was hit by a pitch to force the third run across. Jess Easterling then delivered a three-run triple and scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly Oliver Marmol. Jared Greenwood broke up the no hitter and the shotout in one swing of the bat, hitting his eighth home run of the season with a solo blast in the top of the fourth. In the sixth, Western trimmed its deficit to four (7-3) as Trey McDaniel had a leadoff single and scored on a double to right-center field by Chris Davis. Tim Hallam followed with an RBI single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. The Cougars got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a Wabick triple and subsequent RBI ground out by pinch hitter Michael Harrington. Easternling started the sixth with a solo home run, his seventh homer of the season to give CofC a 9-3 lead. Charleston regained its original seven-run lead in the bot- tom of the seventh thanks to a one-out, ground-rule double by Wabick and an RBI single by Harrington. The Cougars would eventually load the bases and push its 11th run of the game across the plate on a single by Marmol.. In the eighth, Greenwood drew a leadoff walk; moved to second on a ground ball and scored ona single by Barrett Shaft to make the score 11-4. , Seven different Catamounts had one hit each, including the only two seniors in the WCU offensive lineup, Davis and Greenwood. Freshman Greg Holland (2-3) suffered the loss. . Despite allowing the seven runs in the first, he only allowed six hits and seven runs. , Western Carolina ends the 2005 season with a 33-23 record. Sports Commentary: This is Baseball By Alex Pellom | Contributing Writer Baseball and cracker jacks enter our lives at a young age through our fathers, little league or through trips to the ballpark. Many of these summers bring lifelong memories to us as children that stick with us throughout our lives. Some rare occurrences have taken place in past summers include Hank Aarons 715th home run in 1974, Cal Ripken Jr. starting in his 2,131 consecutive games and the memorable summer of 1998 when two men named Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa electrified the nation and revital- ized Major League Baseball with their chase to Maris. This summer has the chance to be one unlike any other in the past 40 years. Chicago Cubs first baseman Derek Lee currently leads the National League in all three major batting statistics; bat- ting average, homeruns and runs batted in or RBIs. While many different people have approached this hallowed accomplishment, only 14 different men have won the Triple Crown. Some of the leg- endary winners include Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb and current Washington Nationals manager Frank Robinson. The last time the Triple Crown was won in baseball was 1967 by Boston Redsox catcher Carl Yastrzemski. In the time that has passed sine Yastrzemski last accomplished this feat, nine perfect games and 90 no-hitters have been thrown. Six different players have hit four home runs in a game, 33 pitchers have struck out four batters in one inning and 108 players have hit for the cycle. MLB all-stars Mark Prior, Alex Rodriguez and Albert _ Pujols all remained unborn at the time of the last winner. The most recent push for the crown occurred in 1992 when Gary Sheffield won the batting title with a .330 average, 33 homeruns and 100 rbis. This MVP-type performance fell short to teammate Fred Crime Dog McGriffs 35 homeruns and Philadelphia Phillies catcher Darren Daultons 109 rbis. If Derek Lee is to continue this amazing run at history he may not have to be the only one to remain on fire. As the season con- tinues along, many pitchers will pitch around Lee in crunch times if the batters around him dont continue to protect him. This along with the current trend of many players in baseball only excelling in one of the three categories surely makes the Triple Crown more and more difficult to attain. While not only having to produce career numbers, Lee must.also keep ahead of Albert Pujols homeruns, Carlos Lees rbis and continue to stay ahead of Nick Johnson and Miguel Cabrera in the average department. History is not on the side of the Cubs first baseman. However, after 87 years the Boston Redsox didnt listen to history. Mark Mc- Gwire and Sammy Sosa didn't listen to the odds of breaking Roger Mariss single season homerun record either. These are the things that let us as fans runaway from the reality of jobs, school and pressures of family life. This is what the boys of summer have giv- en us to look forward to every summer since 1860s when baseball was described as the national pastime by many Americans. This is what keeps us young. This is baseball.
