  • WCnewsmagazine Summer Review: And You Thought Cullowhee Was Dead in the Summer! May 25 A female graduate reported that someone had established a fraudulent account using her social security number. Her name and SS number had been in the computer that was stolen from Killian Annex in December; however, her wallet was also stolen from her room in Scott in the same month. The investigation is continuing. June 1 The Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department re- sponded to a vehicle fire in the parking lot of the Outreach Center. The truck was engulfed in flames just moments after it was seen with smoke coming from the cab. No one was injured. June 4 A male student was counseled by University Po- lice after he was found riding a bicycle while in- toxicated. June 7 Anon-student was arrested by University Officers after officers received a report of a domestic situ- ation off campus. The officers spotted the suspect car turning onto the campus.Officers stopped the car. The occupants had been drinking. The pas- senger was a former Western student. A loaded handgun was found hidden between the floor mats. The driver was charged with a weapons vi- olation, driving while impaired and driving with a revoked license. In addition, there were warrants out for the driver from another county. June 8 Housekeepers found drug paraphernalia and oth- er unknown substances during cleaning opera- tions. These items were turned over to University Officers for further investigation. June 10 A non-student was cited for simple possession of marijuana, paraphenalia, and a fictitious tag. June 14 University Police received reports that inmates working near the Baptist Church Lot were mak- ing inappropriate remarks to female students. Of- ficers warned the workers against such activity. Officers will closely monitor the situation. June 14 Jackson County authorities requested the assis- tance of University Police during a chase. Univer- sity Officers were asked to set up stop sticks at NC 107 and Jack the Dipper. The suspect stopped near the University Officer's location and jumped into the Tuckaseigee River. June 15 Officers dealt with an emotionally disturbed per- son and transported the person to a medical facil- ity for evaluation. June 18 Officers stopped a car at the Village follow- ing a report of reckless driving. All occupants are underage and alcohol was involved. The driver is a student and his two passengers are non-students.The drivers parents were notified and the two passengers banned July 8 Officers found several marijuana plants growing near the Baseball Field Lot. Following further investigation with Jackson County authorities, a suspect living nearby was charged with various drug violations. July 10 Report Officers were requested to assist Jackson County officers at some off campus apartments where a female was passed out in a parking lot due to alcohol overdose. WESTCARE EMS transported her to Harris Regional Hospital. Later another female at the same location had to be transported to Harris Regional Hospital with alcohol overdose. The persons involved are not students at Western but are students at other North Carolina universities. July 10 Officers charged a non-student with driving while license revoked, possession of an open container in passenger area and a headlight violation.
