  • 23 WCnewsmagazine #18 College of Charleston sweeps Western Carolina by Zachary Colburn * WCnewsmagazine drenping the Catamounts in conference play at 3-3 Game one of this seri F out to be a pitcher's duel between Cata ( Caleb McConnell and Cougar starter Ryan Edel Neither team was able to put runs on the epi until the bottom of the 7th inning when Cougar Brett Anderson sent the 3-2 payoff pitch from McConnell over the left field fence to give College of Charleston a 1-0 lead. The very next inning the Catamounts tied up the score at 1-1 when freshman Nate Hall hit his second homerun of the season off Edell. The Cougars answered back in the bottom of the 8th inning when Phillip Coker led off the inning with a triple off of McConnell. After that at bat, new pitcher Brian Barnes was able to get the next batter to ground out, but Byron Barber smacked a double down the left field line to put the Cougars up for good, 2-1. Luke Miller then came out of the bullpen to get the last two outs of the inning. Brett Harker got the win in relief for College of Charleston by pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out three. McConnell dropped to 3-2 on the season, allowing eight hits, two runs and two walks while striking out three in seven innings of work. The Catamounts were only able to muster five hits in the game: Hall and Tim Hallam had two hits apiece, while Chris Davis had the other hit. The second game of the series on Saturday afternoon had the same late game heroics as Friday night's game, but more runs were scored in a game that included two ties and five lead changes. Western was able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on an RBI single by Steven Strausbaugh. College of Charleston then answered in the bottom of the 1st with two runs. The Catamounts retook the lead in the top of the 4th with four runs. Strausbaugh led off the inning by reaching on an error; Western then loaded the bases with a Trey McDaniel single and a Jared Greenwood walk. Cougar starter Danny Gemma was able to get two outs, but then Brandon Zollman, the Catamounts number nine hitter, punched a two-run single to right field and Barrett Shaft sent a single down the left-field line to score Greenwood and Zollman. Charleston put across a run on a pair of doubles to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning but left the bases loaded when WCU starting pitcher Derrick Hawk was able to get the batter to ground out to end the WANTED nts would then get the aad back i of the inning (8-7) with two walks and tsmen. Tim Hallam started out the inning by reaching on one of the Cougars five errors. Two outs later, Hallam moved to third base on back- to-back walks to Strausbaugh and McDaniel. The Cougars would tie the game at 8 in the bottom of the 8th inning with an RBI single. Westerns lead-off batter, Strausbaugh, reached first base on another Cougar error, then moved to second on a sacrifice, but was stranded there by closer Brett Harker. The bottom of the 9th inning began with Cougar Brett Anderson getting on base with a single; he then made his way to third on two wild pitches by Catamount closer Brian McCullen. The infield then came in with one out, but the plan backfired as Cougar Phillip Coker smacked a single just beyond | the reach of the shortstop Hallam to give College of Charleston the victory, 9-8. The third game of this series saw College of Charleston score early and often, pounding out 18 hits, including five homeruns. The Cougars jumped right out of the gate, scoring five runs in the bottom of the ist inning to take an early 5-0 lead. The Catamounts cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the 4th inning. Strausbaugh began the inning with an infield single and moved to third on a double by Jared Greenwood. McDaniel then brought in Strausbaugh with a sacrifice fly, and Greenwood scored on a Hall single. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars scored two more runs to go up 7-2 and extended the lead to 10-2 in the bottom of 5th on a two-run homer followed by a triple. They added three more in the bottom of the 6th on a walk, a double and a triple, then added four more thanks to a three-run double and a sacrifice fly, to give the Cougars a commanding 17-2 lead. In the top of the 9th the Catamounts added three runs and the game ended with a final score of 17-5. Cougars starting pitcher Zach Piccola was credited with the win by pitching seven innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and two walks while adding three strikeouts. Bryan Tupper was given the loss for the Catamounts, allowing five runs on five hits in one inning of work. inning.
