  • by Margaret Hester * WCnewsmagazine One of the main attractions to Western North Carolina is the environment. Getting involved is the best way to ensure that these attractions are around for many years to come. Two non-profit organizations of extremist proportions are becoming more and more of a majority: Greenpeace and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). PETA was formed in the 1980s and is based out of Norfolk, VA. PETA also has operations overseas in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany and many more (peta.org). When most people think of PETA, they think of many crazy animal-loving people who make harsh decisions towards those who choose to eat or wear animal products. This may be the case for some; however, it is not always true. PETA is also an organization involved with the environment. Animal waste is a huge concern within the environment. Did you know that animals raised for food produce 130 times more excrement than the entire human population (goveg.com)? This causes many pollution problems. Along with water pollution, water waste is also US does not sign Kyoto Protocol by Sara Halterman WCnewsmagazine On February 16th the Kyoto Protocol was accepted and validated by 141 nations including the European Union, After seven years of negotiation ~ the bill that places limits on carbon ~ monoxide and other gas emissions tributing to the rising temperatures the globe is in effect. tists link global warming to of greenhouse gases. The dustrialized nations to certain percentage ous trap he emperatures on ea dl said to be a contributor to ris glactr taeitirg and disruptive weathe : ted Sates, which is OL.gre bDuse gaseswin, the wo becoming a huge problem due to the meat industry. Raising animals for food consumes more than half of all the water used in the US. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat (goveg.com). This may seem extreme, but it is obvious that water shortages are becoming a huge issue. Land shortages and deforestation are also major environmental issues that can be linked to the meat industry. Twenty times more land is needed to raise and feed animals than for plants (goveg.com). Rain forests are even being cut down to use for space to raise animals (peta.org). Is it necessary to have an environmental loss just to feed yourself? Greenpeace is another organization, similar to PETA, but members of GreenPeace are devoted to the environment only. Focusing mostly on stopping climate change, protecting oceans and forests, stop whaling and much more, Greenpeace has been around since 1971 (greenpeace.org). Sometimes to reach their goal, members of Greenpeace will stop at nothing, including putting themselves and others in danger. One way in which members protest is as Spans t Pine LE WA Oh eer the pact, committing the United States to cutting emissions by seven percent, but the pact was rejected in the Senate. The agreement was ar ratified and in 2001 was denounced by ident Bush. The President says signing would be bad for the economy. to the United States decision the Kyoto Protocol, White House 17 WCnewsmagazine and PCTA allow you to become involved by chaining themselves to trees or equipment. Also, Greenpeace has been known to place metal spikes into trees causing damage to people, and their equipment, who may try to take down the trees (greenpeace.org). However, Greenpeace has not always been the extremist organization that they are known to be today. In fact, many members choose to protest peacefully. These protests have proven helpful to the environment. Thanks to Greenpeace, over 2 million acres of land in the Amazon has been conserved (greenpeace.org). Aiso due to Greenpeace, many policies have been established, including ship regulations for transporting hazardous materials (greenpeace.org). If nothing is done to help conserve the environment, it will not be around in the near future for all to enjoy. Contributing to these organizations is one way to become involved in helping the environment. Being informed about PETA and Greenpeace is the best way to ensure you are helping to contribute. For more information, please visit PETA.org, GoVeg. com and Greenpeace.org. Corresponde Robert Young says global warming i is a huge problem that should be embraced by _ industrialized nations including the worlds largest emitter. If the arctic caps continue to melt it could raise sea level five meters vertically, flooding a lot of land. It would change the coast of North Carolina, moving the shoreline five miles back. In response to the claim that signing the agreement would jeopardize the America economy Young says the solution is identifying alternative energy sources and making them affordable.
