  • Catamount Baseball Team Finishes 8-1 in SoCon Final by Ben Brooks | WCnewsmagazine The Catamount baseball team wrapped their season up in Charleston, South Carolina with a nice finish in the Southern Conference finals back in May. Despite a valiant effort by the Cats, The Citadel won the final Sunday game 8-1, with freshman Bulldog pitcher Justin Smith pitching a complete game. The Catamounts were the first eighth-seeded team in the Southern Conference to attempt a championship win after having a phenomenal tournament performance; however, the Bulldogs were just too tough. The day before, The Citadel pulled off a win over Western Carolina with a score of 9-2: the first of the three championship games. Having scored first, The Citadel took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Chip Cannon was sent home through the sequence of a sacrifice bunt and ground out. The Bulldogs were just getting started as they again scored in the third inning with a single up the middle to send Will Coker in for the score, who lead the Bulldogs batting order with a double base hit. The fight was slowly being drained out of the Catamounts as the Bulldogs upped the ante in the fourth inning. Three more runs were tallied by The Citadel, as two were batted home by Andy Phillips with a single and then another single by Matt Covington sent Phillips home. Covingtons single was a tie on the SoCon Championship record with 13 hits during the tournament. The fifth inning reared its ugly head as Chip Cannon hit his 16th homerun of the year, leading off at the bottom of the inning. The homer was Cannons second critical hit of the game, increasing the score six-zero. Brian McCullen, a relief pitcher for the Cats, was to thank for keeping the score at six to nothing, by acquiring a strikeout. The sixth inning proved to be nothing short of disappointing as well, as The Citadel scored again. To make matters worse, Matt Covington was hit by a Catamount pitch, sending him to first base. Covington would soon score again, thanks to a single by Chris Ard, which advanced him to second; he was finally brought home by way of pop-out from Josh Stackley. The scoreboard read eight to null, with Jon Aughey singling, stealing second and being driven home by a single from Mark Egleton. Seven innings and still no Catamount score: however, the game slowly wound into the eighth when the Bulldogs were caught off guard. Denver Edick was walked at the top of the eighth, but was advanced to third by two ground outs. Then, Brian Todd Roper, along with Barnes drove a single into mid field, sending Edick home for a score. With the score eight to one, the Catamounts still had little Brian Sigmon and Denver hope of returning; nevertheless they fought hard until the game was over. Edick, ended their For the baseball program, three seniors Todd Roper, Brian Sigmon and Denver Edick, finished their careers on good impressive careers Sunday notes as each had hits, and an all around good game.
