  • ONO LO EN OE Ee ae ee by Jessica Jarrard | WCnewsmagazine | cant begin to tell you how many times I've heard the phrase: There is nothing to do in Cullowhee. Perhaps that is true if you are looking for a nigh club, or a strip mall, but if you are looking for a nice hiking area, a rock to climb, a trail to bike, a river to raft, or just a nice scenic view from the parkway, there is more. than plenty to do. Within an hour of Cullowhee there are countless trails to be hiked and miles of ground to be covered. Hiking trails include Water Rock Knob which is right off the parkway. Take 23-74 towards Waynesville, get on the parkway, and take a right toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and drive for approximately | twenty minutes. There is an overlook from the parking lot, and the trail itself is only 0.5 miles up. It is a pretty easy hike and is nice if you are looking for something to do with a short amount of time to do it in. Longer trails include that of the Appalachian Trail which picks up at Clingmans Dome off of 441 going towards Gatlinburg. Anyone who has read Bill Brysons book Walk in the Woods has heard wonderous tales of the outdoors, including this peak, which proves one of the hardest sections of the trail. Panthertown has quite a few hikes in and around the area. Panthertown is a short drive from Western as itis located in Cashiers right off Hwy 64 on Cedar Creek Road. A few of the trails are hard to follow, especially in the summer when much of the vegetation is in full bloom. Also be careful after heavy periods of rain, as some trails have a tendency of being washed out after large amounts of rain. Perhaps one of the best all around hikes is the Pinnacle trail, which takes about three hours to complete, as it goes straight up the mountain. It is a short drive from campus, and has a fantastic view from the top. To get to the trail head, take Skyland drive past McDonalds, turn left on Fisher Creek Rd. and take it all the way to the end. The trail begins there. Waterfall hikes are always fun. There are a few in Panthertown, but perhaps the most popular is Whitewater Falls located off 281 in Transylvania county. This waterfall is recognized as the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. With a half mile hike down to the bottom, this is a great hiking trip, as the trails are well marked, but quite busy in the summer months. es Not in the mood for a hike but want to see some nice view from high altitudes? Rock climb! While there may be quite a bit of hiking needed to get to the base of the rock, the real thrill comes from gripping granite for dear life. There are lots of climbing options across WNC especially this time of year. Experienced sport route climbers should definitely check out Looking Glass for classic climbs like the Nose. This is a moderate 5.8 climb is one of the most popular in the area. Traditional climbers who are most confident in their abilities should try places like Big Green Mountain in Panthertown, or Whiteside Mountain located in the Cashiers area as well. Many of the climbs here are strictly surmountable by experienced climbers as there is little to no protection on many of the routes. Anyone interested in climbing, but doesnt have the gear shouldn't be intimidated by the sport. There are other ways of climbing on a tight budget. Bouldering has become popular among climbers who are looking for a quick afternoon activity that requires little set up, but a lot of action. Bouldering is essentially climbing without ropes on smaller rocks. All you really need are climbing shoes and a chalk bag. Crash pads are not required but definitely recommended. After sampling the sport of bouldering, those interested should be pleased to know that this is one of the cheaper outdoor sports. All equipment including shoes, chalk bag, and crash pad only costs $300. The only outdoor activity cheaper than that is hiking (if all you use is your shoes, as backpacks can be quite expensive). There are many local bouldering spots that include one or two boulders here and there. The most popular spots for day trips include Rumbling Bald which is located near Chimney Rock State Park, and Looking Glass boulders located near Looking Glass in Brevard. For those who want beautiful views with limited amounts of time, and minimal walking should take a nice scenic drive on the parkway. Once you reach the parkway, you can turn left to head toward Asheville, or right to go to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Taking a trip to Asheville and have a little extra time on your hands? Just follow the parkway straight there and pass places like Standing Rock and Graveyard Fields. Heading toward the Smokies, are stops like Water Rock Knob that has an incredible view from the parking lot if you arent up for the hike. Other nice drives include a drive along Hwy 64 through the Cullasaja River Gorge. Stops like Dry Falls are a must on this trip. Follow Hwy 64 through Franklin and Highlands for a wonderful view of the great outdoors from the comfort of your.car seat, . , COMP POEAPR PANAMA HEP Pe Yee E OOD CUVEE CE Ye BW i ee ted
