  • eae newsmagazine The Village Housing Encompasses More Than the Original Greek New Gift Shop in UC no by Jennifer Wilkey | WCnewsmagazine The new gift shop entrance is conveniently located on the 2nd floor of the UC right next to Java City. This summer, a portion of the WCU bookstores retail operation moved into a 3,000 square foot space on the second level of the recently opened expansion of the A. K. Hinds University Center. The new Catamount Clothing and Gift Shop, across from the student mail center and next door to Java City, opened for business on Tuesday, June 1, 2004. A grand opening celebration is planned for sometime in the Fall, when the students return. WCU clothing, souvenirs, and gift items will now be sold in the new gift shop, while rental textbooks, supplemental | and graduate textbooks, computer supplies, art supplies and school supplies will remain in the old bookstore. It may seem a bit unusual to separate collegiate apparel and gifts from the books and school supplies, as most schools in the country combine these facilities, but University officials say the move is an effort to create a more college store feel for alumni, parents and other campus visitors. The people who are looking for a Catamount souvenir arent necessarily the same people who are looking for a physics textbook, explains Rick Nicholson, director of auxiliary services at Western. By splitting the non-textbook items into their own space, we'll be able to offer a wider array of gifts, souvenirs and similar merchandise in a more attractive space, and be open for extended hours as well. At the same time, we also will be creating more space for books and school supplies in the original bookstore. The wider array of gifts and extended hours will be welcome changes for students and visitors alike. An added benefit from this move is the more appealing, school-spirited atmosphere created in the gift shop by new display furniture and more attractive arrangement of products, fronted by large glass windows and mannequins sporting WCU apparel. As for the original bookstore, the space formerly occupied by retail products will allow changes there as well. Using the additional space, books and school supplies will be spread out and more easily accessible. Also, a change that can be seen as having both positive and negative connotations will occur when the textbook rental program becomes The Greek Village is located on the southern end of campus, behind a self-service operation. Having only schools supplies and textbooks in the bookstore should result in smaller lines during busy times, like students who choose to live on campus.
