Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field. The game was the regular-season finale for both squads. Appalachian State was holding a narrow 10-7 advantage late in the third quarter. A penalty on a Western punt gave the Apps a short field with which to work. Eight seconds and 38 yards later, Jackson found a hole on the left side for the score with 2:47 left in the half, giving ASU a 17-7 advantage. The Mountaineers took a 24-7 lead with 10:29 left in the game on a nine-yard Joe Burchette to Joey Hoover touchdown pass. Burchette completed 14-0f-23 passes in the game for 143 yards to become Appalachian's all-time leader in passing yards with 6,536. After the score, Western Carolina freshman Xavier Godard returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to put the Cats back in the game. It marked the first kickoff return by a Catamount since Kerry Hayes returned a kick 95 yards versus the Mountaineers on Nov. 13, 1993. Each team turned the ball over on down over the next two possessions before Appalachian State ran out the clock for the win. Appalachian State got on the board early. Mark Wright drilled a 44-yard field goal, his longest of the season, to cap a 10-play, 48-yard opening drive. The Mountaineers would punt, miss a field goal and fail on a fake field goal on their next three possessions. Howeer, a Jerrelle Carter interception would lead to a seven-play, 29-yard scoring drive for the Apps, capped by a four-yard Jerry Beard TD with 7:55 left in the first half. Down 10-0, Western cut its deficit to three early in the third quarter. The Cats put together an impressive eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive, with only one play going for more than eight yards. That one big play was when senior Michael Banks laid out for a 33-yard touchdown reception from fellow senior Pat Cilento. Six minutes later, Jackson scored his 38-yard TD to help seal the Catamounts' fate. Cilento finished the game completing 11-of-29 passes for 110 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Manny DeShauteurs added 32 yards on 12 carries, while tight end Brian Rucker hauled in four passes for 21 yards. With his two receptions tonight, Banks finishes his four-year career with 183 to rank third on the WCU all-time list, third on the SoCon all-time list and currently sits at 44th on the NCAA I-AA all-time list. Western's leader in receptions and receiving yards in each of his four years, Banks additionally ranks fourth on the WCU and SoCon career receiving yards lists, while his 19 career TDs is also fourth On the school career list. fumbles. Junior Michale Spicer added two tackles for loss, giving him 26 for the season and adding to his WCU single-season record. Senior Mitch Hall and junior Rod Dunlap each added eight tackles. For the Mountaineers, Beard added 48 yards on 11 carries, while Sterling Hayward was the Apps top pass catcher with four. Josh Jeffries paced the ASU defense with six tackles, including two sacks. Prior to the game 13 Catamount seniors were honored, including Michael Banks, Pat Cilento, Justin Fryer, Ahmed Green, Jeb Hall, Mitch Hall, Dunstan Kendrick, Chris Lane, Pat Leach, Thomas Pruett, Caleb Queen, Brenden Roy and Coleman Tyrance.
