  • 10 CAROLINIAN GET A LIFE December 6,2000 'Cane' You Dig It? Holly Rhodarmer Features Editor The last exhibit of the fall semster in the Mountain Heritage Center promises to be an interesting one. " The Gentleman's Cane" is a collection of more than 50 folk art canes. The display will last until December 18. Canes used to be an essential part of any gentleman's ensemble. Mountain people became excellent cane craftsmen, and have produced some of the highest quality canes in the United States. This eclectic collection, located in Gallery B, features canes in the shape of the human form, snakes and other elements of the natural world. Some of the canes deal with themes, such as politics. The exhibit celebrates mountain craftsmenship. These artists were creative, inspired by their native surroundings, they create art that is unique to rural mountain areas. The display also contains canes made by living folk artists such as Howard Finister, Willie Massey and Denzil Turn-of-the-century canes photo by Holly Rhodarmer Goodpaster. These artists are celebrating the talents of their predecessors. Most of the wood used in the canes is native to the Western North Carolina region. Most of the people who carved these canes are self taught artists, who received no formal training. The gift they left to our generation, and future generations, is the gift of their heritage. It is carved into these canes that their everyday life calls to the viewer. It tells of their hard work, their imagination, and their skill. For more information about the exhibit call the Mountain Heritage Center at 227- 7129.
