  • Lady Cats Fall Short to Chattanooga, 69-57 By Brett Knight Staff Writer I'm sure a lot of people around here in Cullowhee have either read or heard of Charles Dickens' classic "A Tale of Two Cities." There could have been a book written about Monday night's game and it would have been entitled "A Tale of Two Halves". The Lady Cats played a home game for the first time in 42 days and gave conference power and undefeated Lady Mocs of Chattanooga all they wanted, but fell at the end, 69-57. In the first half, Western Carolina hardly looked like a seventh-place team. The Lady Cats got some good looks at the basket, played great defense, and handled the UTC defensive pressure well. WCU took the lead early and maintained that the rest of the first half as the took a 34-25 lead into the locker room. That was credited by their three point shooting, as they shot four-of-six (66% ) from behind the arc. Freshman Tiffany Hamm felt it from outside as she went three- for-three and finished with nine points in the half on her way to 14 for the game. Senior Katie Scott also played well as she went four-for-four from the field and nine points. However, there was a change of scenery in the second half as Chattanooga showed why they were undefeated at atop the Southern Conference. The Lady Mocs came out on fire as they used a 10-2 run in the first four minutes to pull within one at 36- 35. Western Carolina increased that lead back to five one minute later. However, Chattanooga kept the press on and forced turnover after turnover and kept the game close. To make matters worse for the home team, junior Laura Echols the team's leading scorer, picked up her fourth foul at the 12:00 mark. Only 15 seconds later the Lady Mocs took there first lead since early in the first half, at 41- 40. They took control from that point on as the continued to force Western turnovers and controlled the boards with Echols on the See WOMEN'S HOOPS on page 3 Freshman Tiffany Hamm led the Lady Cats with 14 points Mondav night. Cats Fall Short in Charleston By Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Head men's basketball coach Steve Shurina told the Catamount Sports Network in a postgame interview Monday night that the goal for his team right now is to get better every night. The Cats have done just that in their last few ball games. However, despite their improved play the WCU has come up short in the win column. The proverbial steps towards becoming a better team received another setback Monday night as the Catamounts fell in overtime 56-54 to The Citadel Bulldogs in Charleston. The loss drops the Cats to 2-13 overall, winless in three attempts in Southern Conference play. The Citadel, who has won six of its last eight ball games, improved to 9-5 overall, 2-1 in the league. Junior Cory Largent with 15 points and freshman Rans Brempong with 14 led Western Carolina. Brempong also had three blocks. Despite losing the battle of the boards 47-34, WCU was led by Willie Freeman rebounding with 11, all defensive. Junior Casey Rogers finished with eight points, five assists, and three steals. He also drew several charges for the Cats. Western Carolina trailed by three at halftime, 29-26. They stayed close through the second half until a 9-0 Citadel run put the Dogs up 12 with 4:47 remaining. However, the Cats outscored The Citadel 16-4 in the final minutes of regulation and Largent missed a desperation three-pointer to send the game into overtime. In the extra period the teams struggled from the floor, both going 0-for-6. With 14.5 seconds junior Casey Rogers fouled the Bulldogs Alan Puckett going for a lose ball putting the junior on the line. He nailed both free throws and again, Largent missed a three-pointer at the buzzer handing WCU their seventh-straight loss. Puckett's two charity tosses were the only points scored in the extra session. Citadel head coach Pat Dennis said, "We had a great defensive effort tonight. Their zone was god and it got to our shooters, but we won a game that we shot poorly in. But I feel good about our defensive effort. We hung tough and made the stops when they had chances to win it." WCU will look to avenge an early season loss to non-conference opponent Belmont Wednesday night in the Ramsey Center. They will also host the East Tennessee State Buccaneers Saturday night as a part of a women and men's round ball doubleheader. Tip-off for both men's games is 7:00 PM.
