This pity put Western on top of visiting Lenoir-Rhy ne for good on their way to a 53-10 victory Saturday night at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field. The Catamounts (I -1) put on a dominating all-around performance to win its home opener, out-totaling the Bears (2-1) 681 yards to 145 yards in total offense. The offensive output was the second highest in school history. The victory was WCU's third consecutive win during its home opener as the Cats improved to 19-8 in home openers at Whitmire Stadium. WCU's offense was virtually unstoppable in the first half, scoring on its five drives and leading LRC 20:17 - 9:43 in time of possession. The second half went in much the same fashion with the Catamounts scoring on their opening two drives of the half and posting three touchdowns in the final quarter. "They (Lenoir-Rhyne) showed a lot of blitzes and that left them open for some big plays," said Catamount head coach Bill Bleil. WCU was led offensively by the three-pronged attack of Rivers, Seward and true freshman tailback Fred Boateng. Rivers was l4-of-20 for 302 yards, tallying two touchdowns. At the same time, Seward caught four passes for 194 yards with three touchdown receptions, while Boateng carried the ball 17 times for 135 yards on the ground. Red-shirt freshman running back Lee Williams added two rushing touchdowns while junior Rivers, Seward Earn SoCon Accolades Sports Information Western Carolina quarterback David Rivers and split end Lamont Seward were recognized for their outstanding play against Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday night by the Southern Conference Monday afternoon. Rivers was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while Seward received Freshman of the Week honors. Rivers completed 14-of-20 passes for a career-high 302 yards and two touchdowns during his home debut. The Augusta, Ga. native tossed touchdown passes of 67 and 78 yards as he became the first Catamount quarterback since Lonnie Galloway in 1993 to throw for over 300 yards in a game. Seward caught four passes for 194 yards, including three touchdown receptions and was on the receiving end of both of Rivers' scoring tosses. He also set the WCU freshman record for yards receiving in a game, the fifth most receiving yards in school history. Seward's third touchdown catch of the night was a 35-yard reception. Western Carolina will begin conference play this Saturday night, September 16, against The Citadel. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium in Charleston, SC. tailback Donnie Bryant danced his way to 93 yards on just five carries for the Cats. After being kept off the field in week one against LSU, preseason All-Southern Conference selection senior kicker Josh Jones chipped in 17 points, kicking five extra points and going four-for- four on field goals. These included a career-long 52-yarder in the second quarter for the 1999 APAIl-American. On the other side of the ball, the Cats' defense was equally dominant. The stingy defenders allowed no touchdowns (LRC's lone touchdown came from a kickoff return) and only 2.6 yards per play. They also had two interceptions and sacked Lenoir- Rhyne quarterbacks five times. Individually, sophomore defensive tackle Lee Howell had two sacks and two tackles while sophomore free safety Justin Fryer and red-shirt freshman free safety B.J. Jessup each had interceptions. The victory gives the Catamounts much-needed momentum heading into conference play next week. Rivers cites this reason as one of the chief accomplishments of last Saturday's game. "The past two weeks we've learned a lot about our team," said Rivers. "I think this was a really good win for us going into the Southern Conference. A game like this really gives us a sense of comfort." Bleil also points to the success of the Cats young-but-deep rushing attack, which racked up 344 yards against LRC. "Our running backs keep getting better," he said. "We're really young in that area, but I think we have a chance to be really talented." Bleil, however, was reluctant to settle the present running back- by-committee situation in the WCU backfield right now. "Fred Boateng looked very good tonight," he said. "He's getting better every time he touches the ball. Donnie Bryant has moved up a little bit too. If we have a guy producing, we're going to stick with him." "Honestly I'm glad we have three or four running backs," said Boateng. "We always have fresh legs, and it makes us work harder in practice because we don't know who's going to start each week." The Catamounts hope to continue their winning ways this week when they travel to Charleston, SC to take on Southern Conference foe The Citadel.
