  • CAROLINIAN NEWS April 19,2000 Black Awareness Week to Highlight Organizations by Julian D. Ranee Contributing Writer Black Awareness Week provides an opportunity for Western Carolina University's African-American organizations to present themselves to the rest of the university. Organizations will each sponsor an activity during the last week of April. Planned activities include the In Pursuit of Excellence Awards Ceremony, in which African-American students will be honored for their academic achievements and also their community service. The ceremony will feature guest speaker Hasani Pettiford, and will take place on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30pm in the Grand Room. Pettiford is a nationally acclaimed professional speaker, author, financial consultant, and television personality, and has risen to national prominence by delivering a high-energy message, which tells people how to release the 'spirit of lack' and create a proper prosperity consciousness. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Wealth Builders: An Economic Program For African American Youth. Other activities during the week will be a business seminar sponsored by the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. The seminar will be held on Thursday, April 27. On Friday, April 28, there will be a number of events taking place. The first event will be a Back-in- the-Day Celebration. The celebration will start at Ham and take place in front of Dodson cafeteria with various activities for students to participate in. Later in the evening the Organization of Ebony Students will host its First Annual Hasani Pettiford Shoot, Slam and Jam Basketball Tournament. The event will take place in Reid Gym starting at 6pm. Events include a 3-point shootout; slam dunk contest, and a men and women's 3- on-3 tournament. The event will feature a SGA Hosts ASG Retreat by Dawn N. Pasley Asst. News Editor For the first time ever, WCU's Student Government Association hosted the Association of Student Governments (ASG) retreat on April 14-16. The ASG, which is composed of the president and vice-president of each UNC- system university, plus two other delegates from each school's SGA, has a meeting each month at one of the 16 campuses of the system. The last meeting of the school year, usually in April, is considered the ASG retreat, and involves more responsibility for the host school. The three purposes of the retreat are to train the incoming student body presidents for each university, to give out awards, and to elect the new president and vice-president of ASG. Delegations from Appalachian State, East Carolina, NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Pembroke, and UNC-Wilmington arrived at WCU Friday to begin the retreat. The retreat was run by SGA members, both from the executive staff and the senate, who helped create an environment of hospitality for the visiting student government members. WCU was recognized at the retreat with an award for the "Most Improved Delegation," meaning that WCU's SGA has improved the most over the course of the year. "I think it just shows our improvement in ASG," said SGA President Jonathan Rowe. "WCU SGA has contributed a lot to live D.J. and entertainment. On Saturday, April 29, there will be constant activities taking place starting with the OES Cookout and Project C.A.R.E. Softball Game. The cookout will begin at I lam. The soft- ball game will be an activity featured during the cookout. The entire event will take place on the intramural fields near the Camp Lab building. A shuttle will run from the U.C. parking lot to the site of the cookout. Following the cookout and softball game will be the NPHC Campus Step Show. The show will be on the U.C. Lawn and begin promptly at 4pm. The step show will feature "stepping" by the African-American Greek-lettered organizations on Western's campus. The nightcap will be the Annual OES Pageant. The pageant will begin promptly at 7:30pm in the UC Grand Room. Pageant contestants will be featured in vari ous competitions such as eveningwear, a future speech, question and answer session, and the performing arts. Contest winners will be crowned "Mr. and Ms. OES." They will then be chosen to run as representatives for Homecoming Court during the Fall Semester. After the pageant, there will be an after-party sponsored by the sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The after-party will last from 10pm until 2am. On Sunday, April 30, there will be a church service at Mt. Zion AME Church. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. will co-sponsor the service. Service will start promptly at 11 am. To end the week of activities, the WCU Inspirational Choir will host a concert at the Cullowhee Presbyterian Church. The concert will start at 3:30pm. All events and activities will be open to all community members. Please come out and support the African-American organizations of Western Carolina University. For more information please contact Jane Adams-Dunford in the office of Student Affairs at 7234. ASG's overall function. We have a significant presencein ASG based on numbers, we have had WCU SGA members hold significant positions in ASG, and we've also helped ASG more this year in achieving its goals." At Saturday's general meeting of the ASG, candidates ran for the ASG presidential and vice-presidentil offices. Cliff Webster, the outgoing SGA president from East Carolina, and Liz Gardner, a student senator at UNC-Chapel Hill and press secretary for ASG, ran against Andrew Payne, the outgoing student body treasurer at NC State, and Seth Whitaker, a student senator from NC State. The student delegations from each university except for NC State voted for Cliff Webster and Liz Gardner, so they won the positions for the next school year. Among the events on Saturday was a town meeting between WCU's SGA and the other members of the ASG. The goal of the meeting was to share and exchange ideas between the various schools represented in ASG. The students shared ideas that worked on their school's campuses, and let the others know of problems that their school had, looking for possible solutions that might have worked elsewhere for the same problem. "We really need to work together as a system," said Rowe. "Sharing ideas is important." Other activities within the retreat included training workshops, a tour of campus, and social events. Overall, Rowe said that the students from the other universities were very impressed with the weekend. Because You Know What You Want.
