  • 20 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS March 29, 2000 Catamount Golf 'Making Progress' by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor After a showing at The Citadel that head coach Johnny Wike called "embarrassing," the Western Carolina University men's golf team bounced back with a three- round team total of 911 to finish fourteenth at the Pirate Spring Invitational in Greenville, NC. The event was held at the Bradford Creek Golf Course. Charleston Southern University shot rounds of 285,279, and 294 to win the tournament with a combined 858, a mere one stroke over host school East Carolina in second with 859. James Madison finished in third, with a three-way tie for fourth between UNC Wilmington, Liberty, and Bethu ne-Cookman. Wike commented that he felt a little better after this tournament than the one from Charleston. "We played somewhat better, not great, but I'm seeing improvement," stated the Cats' coach. Wike added, "Our best statistical player, Jason Sugg, struggled and didn't play well. That really hurt us." However, all was not lost for the Catamounts. Two underclassmen shot record- rounds for WCU. Johnson City, Tennessee native, freshman Brian Snagid shot a 75 in the first round, followed by a 71 and a 73 for a total of 219. That mark ties the third-best all-time mark in WCU school history in a 54-hole tournament. His score placed him in a tie for twenty-third overall. Snagid's second-day total of 71 was one below par. Two additional underclassman, sophomores Lee Cline and Greg Lewis, finished second and yf third for WCU in the scor- / ing order. Cline shot 73, / 76, and 75, a combined / 224, to finish tied for 47. / However, that mark j tied for ninth in the WCU all-time record a book for a 54-hole tournament. %^ Lewis finished in a tie for seventieth, shooting in the 80s on the first and last days, but shooting one-below par, 71, in the second round. Wike commented that he was pleased with the play of his underclassmen at the tournament. However, he was quick to point out that there is always room for improvement. Rounding out the scoring for Western Carolina was junior Jason Sugg with a three-day, 239, and senior Brad Hawkins with a 241. Sugg finished in a tie for eighty- fifth, while Hawkins was three slots behind in a tie for eighty-eighth. Up next for coach Wike and the men's golf team is a "big test" at the Furman In- WCU Paladins Sweep Catamounts by David Bartholomew Asst. Sports Editor Furman homered four times on Sunday to power past Western Carolina 13-9 at Henon Stadium. Chris Valdes slammed a two-run shot in the first and a solo homer in the third. The Catamounts scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead. Junior center fielder Charles Thomas singled to start the inning off. After a Rod Goldston double, Thomas scored on an Paladin error. Sophomore Morgan Frazier was hit by a pitch before freshman Alan Beck nailed a pitch over the center field wall. The Catamounts also lead 7-4 after the sixth. Yet, the Cats' shaky pitching once again was unable to hold the lead. Furman scored seven runs on five hits in the seventh to take the lead for good. The Catamounts helped the Paladins out with two hit batters. Redshirt freshman Seth Foster picked up the loss. "We are starting to hit the ball a lot better, but we're just not getting the job done." Coach Todd Raleigh said. The loss dropped the Catamounts record to 6-22 overall with a 3-12 conference mark. Saturday's double header was no better for the Catamounts. Furman ended a three-year 13 game losing streak in game one. The Paladins scored 14 runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to put the Western Carolina away for good. The Catamounts assisted Furman's big inning with four fielding miscues. Western lead 8-1 going into the fourth. The Catamounts scored five runs in the second inning. Catcher Austin Smithwick reached on an error to get things started. Junior Charlie Wands then doubled to left center. Second baseman Robert Rudder singled in Smithwick. Senior Tracy Biggs doubled to right, followed by a Goldston single. Frazier then singled in Biggs and Goldston scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Todd Buchanan. Brad House took (he loss for the Catamounts dropping his record to 1-2. In game one, it was the Paladins jumping ahead early on their way to an 8-5 win. Furman lead 3-0 going into the fourth. Western then did some rallying of their own. Frazier and senior Austin Smithwick reached on singles, and Beck on an error. Freshman Jeremy Hamrick then tripled driving in three. The lead would not last. Furman took the lead in the seventh on a Ryan Richetti single. The Paladins added three insurance runs in the ninth. Ryan Basner took the loss as his record dropped to 1-3. tercollegiate April 8-9. Around 21 teams, including entries from the Southeastern, Atlantic Coast, and Southern Conferences will make the trip to Greenville, SC for the event. Wike hopes his squad will continue — to get better week in and week out. However, he knows that it is a long v process. \ "We're hoping to \ build a tradition of j golf at Western J Carolina. We've / made progress, but / you know, you've / gotta crawl before you / can walk, walk before ^y you can run." Senior Brad Hawkins said, "We had a freshman and a sophomore who really played well and kept us on pace with the other teams. The older guys didn't play as well as the other guys." "As a team, I think we're improving and in the future we'll play pretty good," said Hawkins. Hawkin's teammate Jason Sugg feels that the team is starting to pull together. "The freshman and sophomore played very solid—they really stepped up. As a team, we're getting where we need to be." The Furman Intercollegiate will be held at the golf course on the campus of Furman University.
