c WESTERN ID CAROLINIAN GET A LIFE March 29, 2000 Music Review Yippie-Yi-Yay: "N Sync Rides Again by Hannah Crane Staff Writer Well, even though most of you have already formed a opinion on the boy band 'N Sync, I wanted to say a bit about their latest album No Strings Attached, even if it is just for the sake of history. I see myself twenty years from now, watching VH1 's "Where Are They Now?" with my child. They will do a segment on all the boy bands from the turn of the century and when they talk about 'N Sync, I will run to my scrapbook and pull out this review, just to show Junior that I was right in the thick of the hoopla. Where to begin? Everyone who listens to Top 40 radio has heard the first single "Bye, Bye, Bye" a few times. It is even at the top of Rick Dees's weekly countdown show. It's cute, it's fun ... it's overplayed. It's one of those songs that everybody seems to find themselves dancing to. Then when they realize what it is, they look around to make sure nobody saw them. Or is that just me?? Based on title alone, the song "Space Cowboy" brought to mind the Steve Miller Band. From the first few notes, though, I could tell it was a far cry from the classic rock standard, which is a good thing. I was scared. The song was written by a member of the group (former Mouseketeer JC Chasez); I think his heart was in the right place, he talks about all the paranoia and speculation surrounding the new millen- ■ ■ *■/ * iimmmmi ■ I!- .-'*■ nium and says that rather than worrying about what might happen we should just focus on the here and now. But clouding over the message of the song is all this weird stuff, such as the boys repeating the phrase ". .yi-yi-yippie-y i-yay-yippie-yi-yo- yippie-yi-yay" ... ride 'em, boys. My friend—who is a closet 'N Sync fan—said that they have a song on their first album that involves the phrase "Giddy-Up." Is this just a theme, or a cry for help?? The song "Just Got Paid" is a major step away from "Music of My Heart." In the first lines, the boys tell us that they just Spring Fever Sale/Tech Fair Week of April 10th through April 15th is our 1st Annual Spring Fever Sale! So, come by or call us now af: 293-9711 ..■■-■ Thanks, and hope to see YOU there! © got paid and it's Friday night. They're feeling all right and "booties are shakin' all around." The guys are trying to be total bad boys, but they are just coming across as wannabes. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is geared toward teenage girls, one of which I am no longer. The first time I played the title song "No Strings Attached," my CD player actually stopped halfway through. Need I say more? Even though all my sarcastic remarks would have you believe otherwise, this album is really not so bad. The last song, "I Thought She Knew," is pretty good. I saw them perform it on their recent appearance on "Saturday Night Live" and it's a nice touch on the album. It's their only acappella number and it showcases their ability to harmonize well. If I was a teenage girl, this one would be on repeat all the time. The bad boy attempt is a little frightening and they try to get a thug thing going on, but it just doesn't do it for me. A lot of their songs deal with break-ups or trying to convince a girl that her old boyfriend is dog food. But as 1 said before, it is not meant to satisfy the intellectual mind of university student seeking truth on higher planes. However, they are rather photogenic and darn good dancers, which might satisfy other aspects of a collegiate mind. No Strings Attached is available at In Your Ear Music Emporium in Sylva.
