WESTERN CAROLINIAN EDITORIAL February 23, 2000 When Imagined Fire Burns Hotter Bradley Smith, a self-appointed scholar and seemingly self-appointed god, recently sent the Western Carolinian an an advertisement discounting the Holocaust, which is understood by most to be the most horrific mass murder in history. A geno- cidal master plan concocted by the Nazis (not JUST Hitler), amounted to the extermination of Jews alongside homosexuals, the mentally handicapped, and other groups found to be inferior by the Nazis. Smith specifically tries to disclaim comments made by Elie Wiesel, author of "Night" and "All Rivers Run to the Sea," and a speaker worldwide on the Holocaust and hate in general. Wiesel also won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Smith's ad quotes Wiesel as saying that after Jews were executed in the Ukraine, "geysers of blood" came from their graves. He then tries to provide this as proof that Wiesel's testimony should be carefully considered, and, perhaps discounted, because this is "impossible." Well, of course it is! Graphic figures of speech always give an inexperienced listener the understanding necessary to realize the amount of carnage at Babi Yar in the Ukraine. Well, if it was a "cheap novel," Mr. Smith, it sure was a good one! Smith is the director for the Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust, so he claims. How many people are on this committee? One? Smith has only one thing on his web-site (www.codoh.com') or in any of his interviews that makes any real, logical sense. Smith expresses concern over the issue of anti-Semitism, and that challenging an eyewitness account of the Holocaust does not mean you hate all Jews just for being Jewish. Specific facts can be easily miscommunicated. In an interview, Smith goes on to say that while scholars would be patronized for questioning the testimony of a Jew, scholars are expected to question any testimony by a Nazi. In all fairness, Smith may be correct. However, if Smith only discounts the testimony of a few,- including Wiesel and Wiesenthal, and is not trying to debunk the testimony of other Jews, then he has already lost his de bate: The Holocaust occurred, gas chambers did exist, and Smith has made himself look like a blabbering idiot. Smith has also made the comment concerning his mission to make college students question the Holocaust, that he didn't "want to spend time with adults anymore. I want to go to students. They are superficial. They are empty vessels to be filled." And Smith has not all together failed: his advertisements have been published in numerous college newspapers. Well, we're not quite so ignorant, therefore making it dificult to brainwash us. In his efforts to prove Nazi genocide to be a myth, and his challenging of the very humbling US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Smith proves to be a disgrace to humans who are trying to change the effects of the past, and bring peace among races and ethnic groups. He has shown the world, through advertising his ideas, that in its largest and most grotesque form, hate can still survive and thrive in the ever-so-small mind of just one man. Seth R.
