.1*1. ■ I February 16, 2000 SPORTS 19 Catamounts' Streak Ended by Spartans by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina Catamount basketball team couldn't maintain the momentum from their three-game winning streak as they fell Monday night in a 75-53 loss to North Division rival, UNC Greensboro. The previous four games between the Spartans and Western in Greensboro had been decided by a total of seven points, CJrN^'"Vj _ with WCU having WCU 73 edged out the Spartans on the road for the last eight years. WCU fell back to .500 at 12-12 with the loss, 5-8 in the Southern Conference, two games out of third place. Jarvis Hayes, a freshman who ranks among the conferences leading scorers at 16.5 ppg, led Western with 13. Cory Largent, who had a game-high 24 in the Cats 87-81 win over UNCG at Cullowhee January 15, scored only nine the second time around. UNCG went on a 30-4 run that spanned both halves, coupled with Western Carolina's season-low 32 percent from the floor, to take the lopsided win. If Monday's game could be classified in comparision to the Cats' Saturday performance, it would have to be that of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. The great play of Saturday, Dr. Jekyl, was erased by some magical potion and replaced by Mr. Hyde. Looking back at Saturday, those stu dents that went home: shame on you. For those students who were on campus but didn't make it to the Ramsey Center Saturday night, you should feel doubly ashamed. For those who did come out, you were treated to one of the best college basketball games in recent Western Carolina history. The Catamounts got the proverbial monkey off their back Saturday night by outlasting the Davidson College Wildcats 82-72 in the Ramsey Center. The win was WCU's first-ever over Davidson (12-11,7-5) in the Ramsey Center, erasing a 0-8 mark. It was also WCU's 300th win at the NCAA Division I level, as well as marking the first-time since 1996-97 that Western Carolina had won three conference games in a row. "This was a big win for us, and the thing that makes it more enjoyable was that it was a team effort," said head coach Phil Hopkins. "We had four players in double- figures and big minutes off the bench. This was a big win for our confidence." Freshman guard Jarvis Hayes scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. He finished six of 14 from the field, including three of five from behind the three-point arc. He also connected on 10 of 12 free throws in his 27 minutes. His twin brother, Jonas, added his second career double-double performance of 10 points, 11 boards in the winning effort. His old high school teammate from Freedom High School in Morganton, guard Casey Rogers, finished with 15 points, nine assists, and a steal, while only committing two turnovers. "Casey had a great game. He made some good shots and some great passes for assists. He had been struggling a bit, but he came up big tonight," said Hopkins of Rogers. "Casey is a real winner and if we're going to have success, he's going to take us there." Hopkins commented that he was pleased with play off the bench of his two 6'9" post players, Colin Kearns and Todd Seibert. The two combined for three points and three boards in a combined 10 minutes, but the gave much more than statistical numbers. Both Kearns and Seibert battled with Davidson's trio of post men that stacked up 6'9",6'10",and7'2". "We zoned a lot more tonight, but that's the way to combat their height. Colin and Todd did a great job inside for us," said Hopkins. Davidson head coach Bob McKillop was not happy after his team's third loss in its last five games. "This is a team of athletes," said McKillop of WCU. "They killed us on the offensive glass tonight. They kept the ball alive and made shots." He added, "Anybody can knock off anybody this year." Senior forward, and preseason All-conference, Landry Kosmalski, led Davidson. His 25 points tied Hayes for game-high, and his 11 rebounds gave him his sixth double- double of the season. Western Carolina returns to action this Saturday, as Virginia Military Institute comes to Cullowhee for a 7pm North Division battle. The Keydets are coming off their first conference win of the year over Appalachian State. The College of Charleston makes their first visit to the Ramsey Center on Monday for WCU's home finale. Seniors Dondrell Whitmore and Leon Davis will be honored in their last home game. LADY CATS Continued from back up the rest of the game. The Lady Catamounts increased the lead to 12 points, 17- 5, with 10:48 to play in the half. The Lady Terriers fought back to tie the game at 24-24 with 2:05 remaining in the first stanza before Western Carolina took a 27-24 lead into the half. WCU again began the second half strong, increasing the lead to 10, 42-32, with 12:18 to play in the game. The lead rose to 13 points, 53-40, with 7:26 remaining and Western Carolina seemed to have the game in hand. However, Wofford rallied to cut the Lady Catamount lead to four points, 62- 58, with 1:07 to play. It was here that McGillivary's free throws helped seal the win. The Lady Cats go on the road to Statesboro, Ga. to face Georgia Southern this weekend, then to East Tennessee State before returning home on February 26 for the season finale, and senior night, against the College of Charleston.
