  • Totally Biased Catamount Coverage November 3, 1999 blleyball fpbver£)jge| \age Am. Soccer Ousted by Furman in SoCon Tourney by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor WCU 0 GREENVILLE, SC—The inaugural season of Lady Catamount soccer came to an end Tuesday night in the first round of the South- Furman 4 em Conference tournament as the Furman Lady Paladins blanked the Lady Cats, 4-0. The Lady Paladins (18-2) extended their winning streak to nine games, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament to take on Wofford in Greensboro. WCU head coach Debbie Hensley, who coached at Furman for three years, returned to her former school for the first time as an opposing coach. "It felt backwards coaching and warming up on the other side," said Hensley jokingly, "but it felt great to be back. "I'm so proud of this team this year. Every game we went into we were the underdog, but we always fought to the end," Hensley said. "I'm amazed at how hard this team worked." Furman dominated the majority of the first half of play, outshooting WCU 12-1 in the first, 26-2 in the game. This kept Western from playing an aggressive style of game. At the 8:20 mark of the first half, Furman capitalized on a loose ball in front of WCU goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley to open up the scoring. That goal put Melissa Sutton into the Furman 100-point club. FU's Melissa Turner and Tara Brexel tallied assists on the goal. Late in the first, Western showed signs of life, pushing the ball deep into Furman territory on numerous occasions but could never punch through the stifling FU defense. Furman added two cushion goals early in the second half. Lindsey Facciolo scored two goals within the first 11 minutes, putting the game out of reach for the Catamounts. Goalkeeper Tinsley had an outstanding performance, finishing with 11 saves on the Continued on page 13 •SoCon Tourney Bracket and Final Standings on page 12 •Season Wrap-up on page 15 Cats Snap 6-Game Skid Jeremy Queen (62) clears the way for Darius Hooks (18) as he gains part of his 108 yard performance photo courtesy Mark Haskett/OPI by Mike Poston Staff Writer Defense wins championships. Well, we didn't win a championship game, but the Catamount defense was the reason Western Carolina routed the VMI Keydets 40- 2 at Homecoming on Saturday. The defense set the tone of the game on VMI's first possession when linebacker Cedric Crudup picked off a pass on third down and raced 68 yards for the score. VMI 2 That was not the WCU 40 end form the Catamount defense. They also caused two second quarter fumbles that lead to two Catamount touchdowns. Head coach Bill Bleil said the defensive performance was outstanding, adding " The win has been a long time coming." The defense played a hard-fought game and never allowed the Keydet offense to score. The Keydets scored their only points on safety in the fourth quarter. That was after the defense held them on fourth and four from the Western Carolina five- yard line. Despite giving up the safety, the offense played one of their best games. They took advantage of great field position and turnovers. Darius Hooks led the way or the Cats rushing for 108 yards on 13 carries and scored on touchdown. Brad Hoover also had a good day rushing for 38 on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns. Hoover added two receptions for 74 yards. The use of both Hoover and Hooks kept the defense of balanced. After the game, Bleil reiterated that point by stating that Hoover and Hooks complement each other well. The young offensive line continued to improve as they played a solid game. Due to recent injuries the offensive line now starts four red-shirt freshmen and a sophomore, none of which were starters last year. The game also provides a foundation that the Cats can build on for the remainder of the season. Bleil said, "This win is good for the team. They practice hard and have done some good things." He added, "We played well enough to build on." Next week, the Catamounts will get their chance to build off the VMI game when they play Samford at home. Samford is the alma mater of Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden and his son, Terry was head coach at the Birmingham, Ala., school before he coached Auburn to an undefeated season. While the Catamounts were able to contain the VMI running attack, Samford will present a different challenge. The Bulldogs have three quality running backs capable of pulling an Adrian Peterson on the defense. Two years ago, Samford blanked Western 19-0 in the last game of the regular season. The series with Samford has an interesting twist. In the early 70s when WCU was known as a rambunctious campus, six buses of students traveled to Samford for a game and managed to shock the conservative university. The following year, Samford was scheduled to come to Cullowhee, but refused the game because of the "heathens." If the Cats can dominate on the defensive line and the time of possession then they will have a chance to put together their first winning streak of the season. If the Cats fail, it could be a long week leading up to the visit to Boone against Appalachian State in which the Old Mountain Jug will be on the line.
