Below is a snippet of what some of the Boone Goons had to say. The biggest rivals in football today would have to be Western Carolina. At one time, ASU had a great rivalry going with Marshall. However, since Marshall jumped to Division I-A, we have been without a REAL football rival.. .Western Carolina has had the makings for a good rivalry but in the past few years they have been pretty bad in foot ball so ASU would trounce them annually but the rivalry picked up a lot of steam after an AVERAGE Western team handily beat our High-Ranking one last year knocking us out of home-field advantage and a high seed for the Playoffs. The revenge factor from this loss mixed in with the in-state rivalry and the Mountain Jug battle make Western our most obvious rival." - Chris Stonnell First of all, run-on sentence? Tarre Well, I really don't want to know what you "mounting men" have been doing with the cats of Boone, and I really don't want to know why they are "yowling." Plus, can Boone Vocational actually be classified as a University? "I would have to say that western Carolina (capitalization error intentional) is the biggest rival. Even in years when they are not competitive it is always a big game. In fact, games in all sports, women's and men's, are important." - Farrell K. Sheppard For once, I have to agree with what a Boone Goon has said. Rivalry is made up of more than just football. But, unfortunately for Farrell, WCU has had ASU's number in just about every other sport. The women's cross-country team has their version of the jug, rugby has the boot, volleyball has swept them the last two years, and baseball is no contest. Basketball still remains to be seen—but remember this: WCU's men's team is the last home basketball game to be played in Varsity Gym. I'd love to see Coach Hop doing a dance to Mambo #5 over the big 'A' to close that dump. "When I was in school at ASU, WCU was the rivalry. Then it became Marshall and now it is GSU. WCU is no longer among the elite teams in the SoCon, Marshall is not in the conference and longer [sic]. Basketball rivalries have, to me, just started since Buzz got there and ASU is better." - Marty Hampton file photo App State fans are already flocking to Boone for this weekend's match-up. Thank you, Marty. * You just built up Buzz's over-indulged ego a bit more. I wonder what Dean would have to say about that? "Who is App's biggest fjJjT rival? If you are talking about football, maybe the question should be who isn't App's biggest rival? I believe if you ask any other school in the Southern Conference what team they want to beat year in and year out, they would say Appalachian State. A victory against Appalachian State can determine whether a team has a successful season or not. It can determine if a coach keeps his job, and in some cases it can give the student body a few days off from classes (Western). From my experience as a former player, Appalachian prepares for every opponent as if they are the school's biggest rival. They have to, because every school in the Southern Conference prepares for Appalachian State thinking that they are their biggest rival... The reason that these schools feel that App is there [sic] biggest rival is because the Mountaineers introduced them to the "BLACK SATURDAY" experience and I don't think they enjoyed it." - Ed Durham I got two words for 1 ya! No, not those two, though they fit very nicely at a time like this. But those two words are Ego Problem. And just recently from jfgf the Sports Information Director at ASU, "...It has been my observation that the week leading up to a big rival in football is almost like a bowl week...this season, it should be a heck of a week leading up to the Western game...always heated, this year will see the Mountaineers trying to regain the Old Mountain Jug...the Catamounts had a big crowd in Cullowhee last season, but when they come to Boone, I suspect they will see what a real "big" crowd looks, and sounds, like...my advice is to get on the phone and get your tickets early... Until next week, fairways and greens, Bill Dyer." Big crowd? First of all, don't put down the fat sorority girls of App by calling your crowd "big." Secondly, the biggest crowds in Boone came from when the circus had open auditions for the freak show. Hook Says: Save the Sheep... Beat Boone Vocational
