  • August 18, 1999 FEATURES B9 Movie Guy Moves On Up Al - Proud to be Your Features Editor by Alex Esmon Features Editor The Movie Guy is the new Features Editor? That's right reader, this lowly movie freak has been promoted to the lofty position of section editor. All hail to me, the King of Features! Actually, I just wanted to too take a moment to tell you that I'm still the same old movie guy. Sorry to disappoint you. I don't think these new found riches will make me any different. I ordered the cheap leather loveseat instead of the sofa and the 40-inch TV instead of the 60-inch. I've only taken the liberty of blocking off two spaces in front of the Old Student Union-one for me and one for my dog. I haven't even scheduled my lunches with all the high-ranking officials who I'll need to elbow up to. I'm going to wait for them to contact me. I don't want to pressure them; it just wouldn't be neighborly. I may even be a little more humble in my approach to the art of reviewing a film. It's painstaking work to make a film on the paltry sum of 50 or 100 million dollars and I should respect the final product and treat it with more reverence. I should take the time to appreciate an actor who is willing to take a paycut just to act in a "real" movie. You know it really hurts those guys to take five million instead of twenty million for their labors. I should respect the movies that deal with timely and important issues, like "Deep Blue Sea." Gigantic genetically altered sharks are real nuisances out on the coast at this time of year. And don't forget the important new family film from Arnold Schwarzenegger, "End of Days." Many security guards in New York are already taking self-defense lessons on how to deal with pesky demons and devils when the New Year rolls around. You can never be too careful! Yes, I'm going to change my ways. I'm movin' on up! Sometimes it also gets overlooked just Cheang CHINESE a JAPANESE CUISINE Bet you didn't know... ...that most Chinese food contains high fat and a ton of calories. Now you can enjoy the great tast of Oriental cooking preared with your health in mind at the Cheang Restaurant in Sylva. We use only Sesame oils and a lite soy sauce in our meals. And we grill, stir-fry, and steam the freshest ingredients. Visit Cheang Restaurant in the Wal-Mart Plaza and enjoy a new healthy way to enjoy oriental cuisine. • Healthy Chinese & Japanese Dining • Wine & Beer • Carry Out Available • Seafood Buffet - Friday & Saturday night 828-586-8805 170 Wal-Mart Plaza Hwy 107 - Sylva, NC 28779 how much work it is to review a movie. I have to make time to go to the theater and with my busy social calendar, that's no small challenge! I have to force myself to eat popcorn and drink dangerous amounts of Cherry Coke and then—this is the worst part—I have to spend two hours staring at a screen while thousands of movie cells flash in front of my eyes at incredible speeds. Then I have to drive home and eat some more brain food so I can muster the energy to write . This is a very taxing experience. Film critics around the country sacrifice every week just so readers can be informed on the latest but not necessarily greatest films as they are released.for viewing enjoyment. You can always spot the film critic in a crowd with his sunken and blood shot eyes that stare blankly at nothing in particular. Hours in front of a computer screen are the reason for this horrible physical ailment. But being the staunch, goal oriented, workaholic that I am, I will strive to bring you all the important, timely news in a meek,, humble and completely non opinionated manner each week As a way to get readers more involved, this year I plan on having a weekly commentary on some aspect of entertainment be it music, movies, art, school policy, the weather, and other topics of interest to me, each and every week. I may even tread on the hallowed ground known as the Wide World of Sports. If you have a question about my logic, or you just want to tell me I'm stupid, you can write to me here at the Western Carolinian, attention Alex Esmon, Features Editor. Make sure the last part is there, or I won't take you seriously. Also send any spare cash or change you may have lying around, as donations will increase the chances of your letter being referred to in my column. Hopefully this will be a way for all of us to talk and interact in a healthy and meaningful manner. I'm all for promoting togetherness and brotherhood among all entertainment readers. Maybe we will even have a hand holding vigil on the UC Lawn at the end of the semester. Well, I guess there are a couple more things to say. If you are interested in writing for this exclusive powerhouse of information, stop by the Old Student Union anytime Monday afternoon between the hours of two and six (preferably in the afternoon) to see me for a very in depth interview. Lastly, I hope to make your reading experience an enjoyable and entertaining one each week. I may be a bit sarcastic from time to time and it's true that I can go overboard on my ranting. But I hope that you always come away from this column having had a good chuckle and a perhaps even shed a tear or two.. .but no more than three. www.crossroads-sylva.com for updates phone 631-3322 Main Street, Sylva Dining and Entertainment Calendar of Events * Karaoke w/Tf3M'!!Tf>rioke!'Davis 9:00pm No cover I* Opea !Vl,e/3CQU$-t!C )3SVj 8:30pm No cover W/MtH V&bCtoimmmMti 8:08pm $5.00 Mon, Aug 2 Thur,Aug5 STAND-UP COMEDY NITE 8:30pm $8.00 Heaiiiwr- Hwtry W«kh t ftntiifw) ywst Sttwart Haff Fri, Aug 6 ''A'NCi^lR MMM®?^!**^^^*?^-^ 9:30pm $5.88 Sat, Aug 7 &MiteWli&ht frtesjcrodq 9:38pm $5.00 Mon,Aug9^|^T^^|[|^»£5Wg|»fc 10:80pm $3.88jh«« $5.00-«far» 9:00pm $2.00 Tmnwin; inn Bents uomperi «. irano-.
