  • 11"! I iCI TO lllllCtll Baseball Keeps Pace; Beats Boone Goons Twice by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The mark of a good team is that even when they don't play their best "A" game they can still win. The Western Carolina Catamounts did just that this past weekend as they took two of the three games from arch-rival, Appalachian State. Rodney Hennon, who lectured to his team longer than usual following Sunday's win, was pleased, but not satisfied. "I don't think we played our best ball this weekend," stated Hennon. "But, we were fortunate to win two." Those two wins for WCU (22-15-1,10- 6), coupled with The Citadel's sweep of UNC Greensboro places Western solidly in third place in the Southern Conference. In Sunday's rubber game, Western battled back from a [ - ] deficit, then used senior Steve Harris's fifteenth homerun on the year to beat ASU, 5-4. After playing what Hennon called "our most solid defensive games" on Saturday, Western committed six errors on Sunday — and still won. Freshman Brad House, in his second- career start, went seven and a third innings, keeping WCU in the game during the error-laden ball. House and senior Erik Turnrose, who pitched the final inning and two-thirds to gain the win, combined to hold ASU to five hits on the day. "Brad [House] really stepped it up for us today," said Hennon. "He pitched real aggressive. He didn't let the errors phase him." "Turnrose came in from the pen and did a great job. He's done well the last week and a half in that role for us," stated Hennon. With WCU down 3-1, ASU intentionally walked Southern Conference homerun leader, Chris Moore, to get to freshman designated hitter, Morgan Frazier. "Mo" didn't let that get to him. He simply delivered a three-RBI double to left-center to give WCU a short-lived lead at 4-3. "Morgan has been struggling as of late," explained Hennon. "But, he showed a lot of maturity in that three-RBI double in a pressure situation." Also for WCU at the plate, right fielder, Eric "EJ" Johnson extended his hitting streak to 18-games, the longest current streak for a Cat. Saturday afternoon, the Mountaineers ended WCU's eight-game winning streak over Appalachian by beating Western, 6-5 in game two of the series. ASU's John Anderson's second- homerun of the year broke a 5-5 tie, and was the game winner. .aatrf^^a^aW ada^l^B^F ata^r^a^aW .a*. ^^ ■■ ^^^^k ^^mfft^Ti^';, 'IV.I 'WXXXyjL'VNBfr A Wr&@ A*s*f ®f%m&®&- #f ftopolf Pm&St Wi$f$lm BASIC TUNE-UP (1§SI mi&lwMBg ;£»**#? WCU won the game 11-4. Going into that inning, WCU held a slim 3-2 advantage over ASU, but that inning "broke the back" of the underdog Mountaineers. WCU took on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon in Asheville.
