  • i man by Alex Esmon Staff Writer No one is immune to the distress of infatuation and the constant longing for the apple of the proverbial eye. Everyone gets bitten by the love bug—even William Shakespeare. "Shakespeare in Love" is the latest film from Director John Madden and writer Tom Stoppard. Stoppard has already garnered a Golden Globe for his script, which by many accounts is the best of the year hands down. John Madden, who recently received much acclaim for his pe riod piece "Mrs. Brown" has also been showered with praise for his work on the film. The title of this film is very apt. This is a story of everyone's favorite bard and what happens when he falls in love. Joseph Fiennes (Elizabeth), the younger brother of Ralph Fiennes, plays the lovesick playwright. Young master Will is at a quandary: he has writers block which is stopping him from progressing on his most recent play "Romeo and Ethel: The Pirate's Daughter." Enter Viola DeLessops, played by Gwyneth Paltrow (Emma, Sliding Doors). When Will discovers Viola he is instantly thrown into a whirlwind of adoration. While this is going on there are many interesting points which the film tries to reconcile: The absence of Females on stage, the patronage system in the Elizabethan world, the Hierarchy, the Chain of Being and the impact of the puritans (just to name a few). Those pesky puritans! "Shakespeare in Love" is carried by two incredible performances from two secondary characters. Tom Wilkinson and Geoffrey Rusch star as Hugh Hennyman and Phillip Enslowe, the two men who provide much of the comic relief and serve to play as perfect foils for one another. Rusch, A Lovesick Bard who already has an Oscar for his part in "Shine," is the front runner at this point for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Wilkinson will be remembered for his role in last year's knee-slapper "The Full Monty." The rest of the cast is exquisite as well. Colin Firth (Pride and Prejudice) stars as Lord Wessex, Judi Dench (Mrs. Brown) is Queen Elizabeth, Ben Affleck (Chasing Amy) is Ned Alleyn, and Rupert Everett (My Best Friend's Wedding) is the other bard of the time period, Christopher Marlowe. "Shakespeare in Love" is an excellent film for anyone who likes movies. There are amusing aspects, romantic aspects, serious aspects and downright gut-busting hi- larity. I guess Horror fans are the only ones who are left out in the cold. But then...who &ill Sbafer «Tom cK§Her 317c <West ?Jai» St. Sylva, 9%c. 28779 cares. There is, course, a smattering of tragedy, but what would a film on Shakespeare be without a little stomach wrenching! Look for "Shakespeare in Love" to take home a number of Oscars. "Shakespeare in Love" is showing in the Asheville area and is rated R for sexual content. Become a Leader.... Become a Representative....
