inian The 1998 Mountain Heritage Day Edition If they were looking for mountain food, they also left hun- If that was our mountain heri tage, it's pretty lame. Once again the weekend has come and gone (where Cullowhee plays host to the annual Mountain Heritage Day). And once again, Cullowhee was transformed into the world's largest craft show and football game instead of an exhibition of the rich Appalachian heritage we commonly hear of. I walked through the never- ending rows of dealers selling everything from Coke bottle wind chimes to corn cobs labeled "Hillbilly Toilet Paper," among other useless crap. The labels read: Made in China; Made in India; Made in Bangladesh. What kind of Mountain Heritage are we promoting? Himalayan? It sure wasn't Appalachian. Where was the guy with a chainsaw carving tree stumps into odds grizzly bears? Where was the eld erly couple weaving straw into brooms? Where was the old guy running the moonshine still for all the Florida tourists to gawk over and wish they could have a sip? I didn't see them there. Did you? They must have had better things to do. One could not help but feel sorry for the multitudes walking around the grounds like chickens with their - head cut off just hoping to see a glimpse of the "mountain heritage" promised to them by the University. Maybe Eric Rudolph knows of one, but he hasn't informed me yet. There was, however, a fair share of Barbecue, Indian fry bread and pork rinds. Yummy! After that it was BYOA—Bring Your Own Antacid. That's true mountain fare. I did see one yuppie tourist walking around with a blade of hay in his mouth trying to be a true "mountain man." The Hilfiger Jeans and Rockports tainted his disguise, though. Where is the mountain heritage? You tell me. I'm still looking for it. Oh, yeah, there was also a football game. Through my infinite football wisdom I picked the ETSU Bucs to beat the Catamounts 21- 20. Never again will I sacrifice my Pigskin Picks record at the expense of the Western Carolina football team. Boo Robinson will be the enforcer of that. Following the victory on Saturday, Boo pointed at me and yelled, "Y'all picked us to lose! That motivated us." Glad I could help.
