  • ■nian features September 9,1998 Dr. Patricia Cutspec: The Best Kept Secret in Communications Dept. Commentary by Phoebe Esmon Features Editor There are big goings-on in the Communications Department this year. Two communications students under the tutelage of Dr. Patricia Cutspec have had their papers selected for presentation at the National Communication Association (NCA) Convention in New York City this November 19-24. Senior Communications students Aaron Krauss and Julie Spiro, both of whom also attended the National Undergraduate Research Conference in Salisbury, Maryland this April, will be presenting their papers to the most influential and well thought of people in the communications field. Krauss's paper, entitled, 'Oral Communication as a Sacrificial Lamb: The Practice of Teaching for the Tests,' has been named among the second best student paper in the country. All student papers were judged equally: both graduate and under grad papers were judged in the same contest. Krauss's paper, which marks the culmination of a two year long research project that involved most of the elementary and secondary schools in the state, was co-authored by Julie Spiro, Jenifer Pressley, Langston Lindsay, and Nicole Ridenour. Spiro will be co-presenting "Branching Out to Meet the Needs of Individual Students: The Oral Communication Assessment and Curriculum Program at WCU." Cutspec is the primary author, Julie Spiro and Kevin McPherson are secondary authors of this paper. The Oral Assessment Program consists of a series of "tests" (questionnaires, and Communication students participants in the oral communication project -Photo courtesy Public Information group observations) administered to incoming freshmen, in order to place them in oral communications classes that will utilize the skills they have and build the ones they lack. Spiro was the student in charge of the Oral Communication Assessment Program here at Western last summer. This summer senior communications major Jennifer Pressley spearheaded the program. Assessing the oral communications skill of more than a thousand incoming freshmen is a daunting task. Pressley worked with a team of communications students: Tasha Turner and Carmela Brooks (Asst. Directors), Wendy Anders, Joy Hinson, Tim Enman, Diana Klingbiel, Amy Palmer, Nicole Ridenhour, Natalie Elmore, Aaron Krauss, Forrest Hooper, Chris Lee, April Walkup, David Bartholemew, John King and Jenny Gentry, in addition to Suzon Hawley, a communications instructor, and Rene Corbin, who is the director of Undergrad Assessment here at Western. Spiro will also be co-presenting the paper on Oral Assessment with Cutspec at the Association for General and Liberal Studies in Louisiana this October 15-17. The Western Carolinian applauds the work of Cutspec and all of her students. Education in the Carolinas has long been lacking in the fundamentals of oral communication. The fact that these students care enough about the future to help speaks volumes for Cutspec's leadership and guidance. Together she and her students are working to bring education out of the dark ages.
