  • 6 Thursday, February 61997 Sports Stye ffllratent (Earolinian Lady Cats Run Their Record to 9-10 RUSTY GRAY STAFF WRITER LaSha Jackson scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Western Carolina to a 69-61 win over UNC-Asheville this past Wednesday evening in the Ramsey Center. Jackson, a junior from Dahlonega, GA., shot 12-of-15 from the floor, scoring the most "points by a Southern Conference player in a game this season. The Lady Cats evened their record at 9-9 and UNCA fell to 9-8. The Cats avenged their 75- 70 loss at UNCA on Dec. 29. WCU led by as much as 11 in the first half, but allowed UNCA to get back into the game and at half-time the score was tied at 30. At the 19:20 mark of the second half the Bulldogs grabbed a one point lead. From that point, Western went on a 17- 5 run and never let UNCA get within five points. Karen Mason and Pam Owens joined Jackson in double-figured scoring with 12 and 11 points each. In the end, Western defeated UNC-A by a score of 69-61. On Feb. 1, the lady Catamounts traveled to Varsity Gymnasium, in Boone, to face Appalachian State for the second time this season. The Mountaineers led by only two, 33-31, at half-time, but outscored Western Carolina 45- 26 in the second half, including a 19-6 run over the final 10 minutes. The Lady Catamounts were led by a 22-point, eight rebound effort from junior forward, Jackson. Mason added 16 points. Owens pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, plus added three steals to take over sole possession of Western's all- time steals record. Owens now has 223 career steals, topping the old record of 220 set by Judy Greene throughout the 1981-84 seasons. With the 78-57 win, Appalachian avenged their 72-70 loss to Western on Jan. 4, which broke a 26-game win streak for ASU in the series. On Feb. 8, the Lady Cats will face Furman at Lay Physical Activities Center in Greenville, S.C. In their last meeting on Jan. 13, Furman beat Western 95-76. The Lady Paladins are currently sitting in first place in the Southern Conference with a 7-2 conference record and 15-5 overall. Center Willow Russell, one of the Southern Conference's top freshman this season, is expected to see action this Saturday at Furman. Russell has missed the last four games due to a ih.-ailder injury. The Lady Cats have lost three out of four games in her absence. WCU Rugby Team Falls to Wolf pack MICHAEL PEOPLES CONTRIBUTING WRITER Western Carolina Rugby Team pla} ed an excellent game of rugby against N.C. State, ranked third in the state. The Western Ruggers played two hard fought matchs Saturday, but came up a bit short of the upset. Fullback Jamie Harbour scored an excellent try in the first game, and David Miller added another try in the second game. The match was played under excellent weather conditions, and there was an awesome crowd of student and faculty supporters. The WCU rugby team plays its next game this weekend, Saturday February 8, at Western's Rubber Track. The rugby team hosts Emory University in a match scheduled to start at 1:00 pm, at the track, so come out and support the WCU rugby team. Coming up on Saturday, February 22 Western Carolina Rugby Team will host a round robin tournament featuring Western Carolina, Davidson, and Appalachian State. The tournament will pro vide an all day rugby experience so come out and enjoy -the most popular college club sport in the world. Anyone interested in playing rugby should feel free to come out and practice on Tuesday's through Thursday's. Practice begins at 4:00 on the intramural field beside Reid Gym so come out and learn a great sport, and participate in the tradition of rugby. WRESTLING UPDA TE vjV^ <Q*9 0tn0 Welcome back to Wrestling Update, Cullowhee's number one source for professional wrestling news and commentary. It looks like the WWF is mounting a major comeback. Monday Night Raw was a mixture of live and taped matches. The live matches took place in front of 30,000 fans that packed into Skydome in Toronto. The highlight matches were from The Royal Rumble, a recent pay per view. The Thursday Night Raw mentioned last week is scheduled for February 13. It will be a two hour live broadcast on basic cable (check locni listings). The card is a pay per view caliber lineup. Due to a controversial ending of a 30 man over the top rope battle royal, WWF President Gorilla Monsoon, has ruled a four man match to determine the top rankpd wrestler. The participants are Van Vader, "Stone Cold " Steve Austin, Brett "The Hitman" Heart, and the Undertaker. I like Austin in this one. He's the self proclaimed "toughest SOB" in the WWF. The winner is to face the victor of the main event on Thursday Raw, Psycho Sid vs. the champ "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Micheals, at Wrestlemania 13 for the WWF Championship. The WWF nas a new latenight live show called Shotgun Saturday Night. It is held in bars such as the Mirage in New York. The supply is limited to TV as well. Only selected markets have decided or are allowed to air the show. The Nation of Domination is getting bigger. Savio Vega joined on last weeks Shotgun Saturday Night. That makes three wrestlers, two rappers, and a bunch of skinny guys in suits in the NOD. Despite Jim Ross saying the WWF is building on youth, this week the WWF announced the return of Black Jack Mullagan. Mullagan was famous for his "Claw" hold that used to be censored on TV. Let's just say this guy has a lot of experience. A lot of nonmatch action happened on Monday Nitro. Hulk Hogan offered to put up the title when "Hot Rod" Roddy Piper arrived later at Nitro. The NWO, Hogan's Zeros(I just made that up), were busy Monday night. The Outsiders, Hall and Nash, attacked Lex Luger with lead pipes. Syxx stole the cruiser weight belt from Dean Malenko. Not all NWO ambushes were successful. After Diamond Dallas Page won with an off the top rope "Diamond Cutter", the Outsiders approached the ring with the pipes. Then Sting and the Macho Man appeared in the crowd as Page grabbed a citair. This could mean a new alliance between those three. Still no Piper. More problems for the Four Horsemen. Arn Anderson was mysterious by his absence. Benoit was disqualified in his match. Miss Jacquelyn, the Task Master's new squeeze, attempted to hit Woman with a belt. Benoit threw Conan over the top rope then went to defend Woman. Mongo took Luger's place and fought Jeff Jarrett. When Jarrett won, Mongo's wife, Deborah McMicheals, cheered. She was apparently campaigning to get Double J into the Horsemen. Ric Flair strutted and yelled "..whooooooooo!", much to the delight of the crowd and home viewing audience. Finally Roddy Piper showed up. He brought his young son out and publicly turned down the title shot, citing age and family issues as reasons. Then Hogan came to the ring and degraded Piper in front of his son by smacking him in the back of his head. Piper acted like he was leaving the ring. When his son was out of the ring, Piper took off his jacket and attached Hogan while he was posing. After clearing the ring of Hogan and Eric Bischoff, Piper grabbed the microphone and .accepted the title shot at SuperBrawl on Feb. 23. "In San Francisco, watch my fists go!", said Piper. Should be a good pay per view. I would like to cover more of the Extreme wrestling organizations like the ECW. Unfortunately TV coverage is limited. Any donated information would be appreciated. The next NCW at Bailey's is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. The NCW matches are taped for public access channel 20. Catch Wrestling Update next week when I'll preview Thursday Night Raw and SuperBrawl as well as all the latest pro wrestling news. Questions and comments are always welcome. Track Teams Place Second BRIAN CLARK STAFF WRITER Three school records were broken highlighting the Catamount track and field teams' success this past weekend in the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. Host Virginia Tech won both the men's and women's scored meet. The Western men's team finished second, beating out James Madison, Wake Forest, and Liberty. The Lady Cats also placed second, en route to defeating East Carolina, James Madison, Duke, Wake Forest, and Dayton. The women's 4 x 800 meter relay team of Emily Redmon, Maggie Donahue, Keeya McManus, and Kristen Savery shattered the previuos school record en route to running a 9:19.87 and cruising to a first place finish. Also on the women's side Shawnta Person set a new school record in the 500 meters, clocking a time of 1:15.28. The meet was scored by the top six finishers receiving points in a 10-8-6-4-2- 1 fashion. The men's team had several athletes turn in good performances. Freshman Johnie Morrison sped away to a first place finish in the 60 meter dash, with a winning time of 6.97. Teammate Corey Williams also scored in the 60, as he placed sixth. In addition to Williams' sixth place finish in the 60, he placed fifth in the 300, and third in the long jump. Mike Wingler placed sixth in the 500 meter run (107.53). Carthen was followed by teammates Williams, Ernest Moss, and Jimmy Johnson in third, fourth and fifth respectively. Moss and Carthen were also third and sixth in the long jump. The men's shot put showed Derek Summerour placing second with a put of 51'03.75, while teammate Shannon Rodden was fourth. WCU's women, the defending Southern Conference Champions, were led by Kristen Savery's victory in the 3000 miters. Savery ran away from the field in clocking a 10.29, and cruising to a 12 second victory. Teammate Charlotte Robson was third in the women's 3000. Daree Thompson placed an impressive second in the 60 meter dash running 7.78. In the 500 meters, along with Person's third place finish and school record, showed Keeya McManus placing fourth with a time of 1:15.41 - which also broke the previous school record. In the 5000 meter run freshman Jenny Warford placed third with a clocking of 18:56, while teammate Lisa Karr was fifth. The women's mile showed speedster Emily Redmon coming from way back with less than 400 meeters left to go to capture an impressive third place in 5:19. In the 60 meter high hurdles Rahma Mateen (9.26) and teammate Kamilah gabriel (9.43) placed fourth and fifth respectively. In the field events Dee Mittman placed fourth with a jump of 5 '01.25, while teammate Lakeeva Brooks was fifth. These two also teamed up for fifth and sixth place finishes in the triple jump. In the long jump Mateen was second (18TJ3.00) and Thompson was fourth (17'10.25). The throwing events showed junior Robyn Stockunas finishing fourth in both the shot put and in the 20 lb. weight throw. •The Catamounts have this weekend off before traveling to the Clemson Invitational on Feb. 14 and to the Southern Conference Championships in Johnson City, TN the following weekend. Two Seed in South Still Not Out of the COMMENTARY BY CHAD GARRETT STAFF WRITER Tennessee-Chattanooga has already clinched the Southern Conferences' South Division title, which means, of course, the Cats will not repeat as division champs. However, there is the matter of a certain Southern Conference Tournament Championship, and after all, that is the only way to get to the "Big Dance." Now I know what you think, Western can't win a game away from Cullowhee, (Western is 0-5 on the road this season in the SC) so how are they going to win three straight games in Greensboro. Well, you have a point there, but let me see if I can Change your mind. The first thing we have to do is position ourselves correctly before going to Greensboro. It is imperative that we secure the #2 seeding in the South. If we can do that, we will not have to play two of the three best teams in the conference (UTC, Marshall, and Davidson) before the Championship game because they will be in the opposite bracket. Now the question is, how do we get the #2 seed? Well, it's pretty simple actually. Western has five remaining conference games; two on the road at Appalachian State and Furman, and three at home against VMI, UTC, and Georgia Southern. We will concede a loss to UTC because they are probably the class of the Southern Conference. However, if we can win our other four games and finish 4-1 in our last 5, we will be 7-7 in conference play and the #2 seed. The big test to this equation will come this Saturday afternoon with a trip to play the Boone Goons. Even when Appalachian State is bad, Boone is still a tough place to play. If Western can escape the snow capped mountains with a win, they will be well on their way to securing that oh, so important #2 seed. If Western can secure the #2 seed, their half of the bracket would probably include: The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Marshall, and Appalachian State. Of those teams, only Marshall, has a winning record in the conference. Our first round opponent would most likely be Appalachian State. If the Cats can get that first round victory, they will have won 5 of their last 6 and would be riding a wave of confidence. Now, I can't tell you how this thing will turn out for sure, but I can tell you that this team has plenty of heart, and more talent than any of the WCU teams I have seen in my three years here. Don't be surprised if you are cheering for your Catamounts as they play in their third straight Southern Conference Tournament title game, come March 2nd. Oh yes, it would be a huge mistake to write these Catamounts off now. This team is perfectly capable of successfully defending its Southern Conference Tournament Championship. In fact, as you sleep tonight, let visions of another trip to the NCAA Tournament, dance in your head.
