western ■• # arolinian OPINIONS 8c EDITORIALS The True Army Of God The true army of God has no weapons save for the power of prayer, forgiveness and faith. The true army of God has no terrorist unit, no bomb squad, no hidden agenda and obeys its commander-in-chief's ten commandments. The true army of God knows that two wrongs don't make a right, that vengence is reserved for the Lord, and that you cannot kill in the name of love. The true army of God follows the pathway of grace that is marked by random acts of kindness and is paved with Stones of humility. The true army of God does not follow the pathway of hatred which is pock-marked with acts of cowardice, premediated murder and deceipt. The true army of God attempts to feed the hungry, shelter and clothe the destitute, offer compassion to the weary, and gives Ceasar due what Ceasar is due. The true army of God does not take the law into its own hands, does not act as pudge, jury and executioner, and does not blind nurses or murder off-duty policemen. The true army of God is not a secret society of deranged, self-righteous militants who destroy life, family, dreams or property then runs for the shelter of the wilderness and hides. The true army of God is tens of millions of people from all over the world who come from all walks of life, from all ethnic and economic groups and conducts its business in the light of day so that all of humanity may bear witness to its actions. • The true army of God realizes to the individual that life on earth is but an audi- March 25,1998 tion or eternity. Michael Revere March 10, 1998 SGA Elections are When? JROUP Discounts MMLAELE CUSTOM SCROTRINTING e fc/MPW FRATERNITY e SORORITY ITTO by Terry K. Roberts, Editor-in-Chief • What a day!!! It was early Tuesday. I was out and about doing those usual Editor chores; trying to catch up, reminiscing over past budget debacles, waving at Bardo while he descended the slope. I found myself at the perky UC going after a cup of joe, and thought I'd ease up the "Gone with the Wind" staircase because it crossed my mind to ask when might those SGA elections be held. Upon entering the computer blue room - SGA HQ -1 found myself in front of one of those SGA faces. While glaring at me, she seemed to suggest, "There's that idiot editor, he wants something." So I ask my question, and the response astounded me. "Excuse me, the elections are when? Tomorrow? You're kidding." She said, "No, I'm not, Selected Boy." (Monroe was elected.) I was livid; fit to be tied, son. I began to think out loud. SGA has gone and done it again. They preach that garbage about "the voice of the student"; however, here's another example of voice by proxy. SGA has kept the elections quiet so as to keep their fraternal body intact. No one, I mean no one, instructor or student, knew the elections were being held on Wednesday. Most, when asked, answered, "Guess it will be soon. Why, who's running?" That and the other issue: the SGA changed the rules last year requiring that those who choose to run for president to have prior SGA experience, in essence, eliminating the most qualified students on campus. Then there was the "debate" Tuesday evening. Of course one can't debate one's shadow and expect rhetorical effectiveness. I should add that the mediator was Joseph Monroe II, SGA president ,who only asked questions he felt his cronies could answer with rea- 704-293-3112 HOURS 10-6 Monday-Friday 11-2 Saturday I—e>e:*v4"£c* sonable fluidity. What a joke! O. J. Morris is unopposed and so is the candidate for vice president, David Cowan. It is the greatest form of hypocrisy in this democratic society: a functioning oligarchy. These guys answered questions out the corner of their mouths, hoping no one would declare they were buck naked. It's so damn obvious what the deal is. This student body is the big, big loser in this whole proposition. Monroe insisted these were the two most capable candidates. Yeah right, given the present SGA election bylaws. Our first amendment rights are being violated. The SGA has enacted laws which forbid the flow of free speech. You can't run for president if you don't meet their criteria. I can run for President of the United States, but not for SGA, because I have no SGA experience. The election will go on and so will my protest. I'm starting a petition asking those who will, sign it, thereby demanding a change in the SGA bylaws to order a new election, so as to incorporate those candidates who have been disqualified due to the flaunting of the First Amendment by the SGA. You deserve to be heard. Say it! Lonely News Editor Tired of Loving Alone. liiiriin <w All applicants must possess at least a 2.5 GPA and have been a member of SGA for one semester.
