The good news is a Western Carolina University student organization is ready, willing and able to help. The WCU student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants will provide free income tax assistance beginning February 4 and continuing until March 25. The help is part of a nationwide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. The volunteers—primarily students majoring in accounting, finance and other business-related areas—are undergoing a series of training sessions during January. All potential volunteers must pass a certification examination at the end of the training period to be eligible to provide tax assistance. Only forms 1040-EZ and 1040-A will be dealt with by the volunteers. Although open to anyone, the VITA program is especially designed to benefit lower- income residents who might not be able to afford to pay for professional accounting help, said Roger Lirely, assistant professor of accounting and information systems and adviser to the student group. Income tax preparation help sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. February 4 through March 25 in Room 220 of the Forsyth Building on the WCU campus, and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon February 7 through March 21 at Sylva Presbyterian Church. The Wednesday sessions are designed to be more convenient for WCU students, while the Saturday sessions are geared toward the general pub- "lic. For more information, call Thomas Parks at the College of Business, (704)227-7401. PRSSA OFF TO A STRONG START by Mike Crisp The WCU Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America held its first meeting Wednesday, January 14. Thirty people showed up to elect officers and to make plans for the spring semester. PRSSA is unlike most organizations on campus because it focuses on enhancing the professionalism of the members both inside and outside the classroom. The organization gives students interested in public relations the chance to use and enhance skills such as public speaking, interpersonal communication, writing and editing, photography, group project techniques, web page design and desktop publishing. PRSSA also gives students the chance to interact with the professional world of public relations in a way impossible in the classroom. Last semester, members of PRSSA worked on several projects related to public relations. They wrote, edited, and published a newsletter that was distributed to public relations professionals all across the state. The newsletter highlighted the individual and group accomplishments of members. The group worked with the Jackson County chapter of Habitat for Humanity where they provided a newsletter and public relations' council. Other projects included creating a PRSSA web site, which can be found at http:// wcuvaxl.wcu.edu/~catcom/, and sending three members to the National PRSSA convention in Nashville, TN. They celebrated the end of the semester with a Christmas party in which they exchanged gifts and said goodbye to graduating seniors. This semester PRSSA plans to begin working on larger, more involved projects. "We did a lot of great things last semester," Lindsay Foy, the newly appointed president of PRSSA said, "but it was just the laying of a foundation. Now it is time to build on that foundation. It is time to show the world that we are the future of public relations." Projects include the creation of a newsletter for the Communication and Theatre Arts department. "Last semester's newsletter showed us that we have a lot of talented writers, photographers and editors in PRSSA." Patrick Blankenship, the newsletter's editor said, "this newsletter will be bigger and better, we're going to need to utilize all of the talent that is available to us." Another project involves working with the WCU chapter of the National Broadcasting Society. The two groups are working on the creation and promotion of a professional-quality video of the May graduation ceremony. PRSSA plans to host several guest speakers. The first of these will be Phyllis Bickers from the CAP center. Her presentation will be on Monday, February 2 at 4:15 in Stillwell 116 and is entitled "What's in your future?" PRSSA plans more speakers thanks to recent connections with the Public Relations Society of Western North Carolina (PRAWNC), a professional organization of over 100 public relations professionals in and around Asheville. Mike Crisp and John Slater - group academic advisor - both serve on the PRAWNC board of directors. Another group member, Heather Roberts stated that "along with the professionalism, PRSSA is a lot of fun. I enjoyed being a member of PRSSA last semester and I'm enjoying it even more this semester. It's about being a part of a group of students who are trying to enjoy themselves, while at the same time, are learning more about the world of public relations." To learn more about becoming a member of PRSSA, visit the web site at http://wcuvaxl.wcu.edu/~catcom/ or call Lindsay Foy at 293-0173. Poetry Slam Thursday January 29, the University Center presents the first Poetry Slam of 1998, hosted by Professor Newt Smith from the English Department, Unlike your typical open mic poetry reading, a poetry slam pits poets against each other, vying for the highest score from a group of judges se- ected from the crowd. Last semester's poetry slam was a huge success; make sure you don't miss this one. Sign up at the slam - 9pm - UC Cherokee Room.
