FORD MERCURY DUNNAHOE SHAW BACKS I HE CATS! Customer Satisfaction Isn't Everything... * It's The Only Thing! GERALD DUNNAHOE President 1231 E. Main Street Sylva, NC 28779 Phone: 704-586-0900 FAX: 704-586-8484 Across from the Super Wal-Mart Mystery Donor Gives $100,000 for Computers by Jason Sheets Prospective students in surrounding areas can breathe a sigh of relief. An anonymous Western North Carolina businessman recently pledged $100,000 to Western Carolina University intended to provide financial aid to low-income students in response to Western's new computer requirement. In November, WCU became the first UNC campus to require incoming freshmen to have a university-approved computer. This policy goes into effect beginning in fall 1998. Chancellor Bardo comments, "This donor told me that he feels computers are the future for Western North Carolina. I am very pleased at the faith this individual has shown in the university and in the direction that we are taking to ensure that our graduates receive a high-quality, internationally competitive, 21st-century education." Those eligible for the financial assistance are low-income students from Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties and from the Qualla Boundary of the Cherokee Indians. In the future, select Jackson County students enrolled in the New Century Scholars Program will be given priority for the awards. Sixth graders who are able to do college work but need financial assistance to further their education past high school are designated as New Century Scholars. But this is not a free bag of cookies. These students must meet attendance, academic, community service and other requirements to receive the grant. The program, a partnership between the Jackson County School System, Southwestern Community College and WCU, waives tuition at SCC and then at WCU for these students. "It is our hope that this convinces other business people across the region and the state to follow in this individual's footsteps," says Bardo. "This is a very special person who has a long history of supporting the people of Western North Carolina."
