You will be moved, entranced and blown away," says Charleston's Free Time. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Beth Wood's performances are turning heads from Austin to Asheville. She can rock a room, then spin her audience on its head with her soaring voice and intimate storytelling. Her songwriting is poetry, crafted with the keen ear for the turn of phrase and displaying insight beyond her years. Growing up in Lubbock, Texas, Beth's love of music drew her first to study, classical piano, violin, voice, harp, and finally guitar. Beth's classical background remains subtly evident, mostly in deliciously crafted guitar chords and catchy progressions, which she combines with sultry, staying melodies and dynamic vocals. Beth's introduction to and subsequent love affair with the Blue Ridge Mountains began when she landed at Brevard College, a small arts school situated in the heart of North Carolina's Pisgah Forest, to study piano and vocal performance. After completing a degree in literature from the University of Texas at Austin, Beth began performing around Austin's legendary music scene, both with a band and an acoustic duo. Basking in the rich musical heritage of Austin, she continued to hone her guitar and songwriting skills. She placed second in a local songwriting contest which won her an opening act with John Gorka and helped to launch a string of openers at the Cactus Cafe, Austin's premier folk venue. Beth's first solo stint was opening for Shawn Colvin, and within a year, she had produced her own debut CD, Wood Work, subsequently picked up by Atlanta-based Autonomous Records, who began national distribution and radio promotion. Beth rapidly built a loyal following. The Dallas Ohserver called her "a bright, incisive singer-songwriter." After a string of successful southeastern dates with Wooden Coyote, an acoustic trio comprised of Beth, John Felty and Matt Mayes from the band Jupiter Coyote, Beth moved her home base back to the North Carolina moun- Beth Wood will play in the Cherokee Room at 9 p.m. on November 6. tains in February of 1997. There, as in Austin, she instantly gained the attention and admiration of local songwriters, including Jimmy Landry, David LaMotte, and Chris Rosser. Shortly thereafter, Beth was headlining Landry's prestigious Emerging Songwriter Series (Ellis Paul, Lucy Kaplansky, Martin Sexton, Pierce Pettis) and opening for the Allman Brothers with Jupiter Coyote before 20,000 fans. Conversations with Landry, LaMotte, and Rosser led Beth to join forces with WorkinFolk, a booking and publicity agency representing them and Tom Prasada-Rao. Beth is currently working on her untitled follow-up release to Wood Work, due in early 1998, and looking forward to an even busier year as a singer/songwriter. She will play at 9:00 as part of LMP's Coffee House Series. Admission will be $1 for students and $3 for all others. flofffff. £>oyd f£Ts&5urru£S PET STOP 86 Wa/uart Plaza Suite 2 • Ojftn, HC 28779 PtOHi (70+) 586-1155 LMP Presents Cominq Outdoor Events Mov. 1st Cedar Creek Caving Mov, 2nd Great Smoky ML Hike Nov, 8th Crowder ML Climbing Call 7206 or 7479 for more details LMP Presents Rock N Roll Comedian Jaz Kaner as seen on MTV's MHoutComemwr mi Comic Strip Lit/em fu Saturday in the Cherokee $1 - Students $3 - Non-Students i ~% -m <r*-« ^r~—» ^r~~_ ESowlin< Nov. 7th in Franklin Sign-up @ UC info, desk LMP Presents Tennessee Aquarium Tri Nov, 5th 8:00 am Nov. 6th 7 & 9:30pm Nov. 7th....Midnight Nov. 8th 9:30pm $1 Students 13 Others
