  • 20 Western Carolinian February 1,1996 Sports Cats Blitz Bulldogs by Jason Queen Western Carolina's men's basketball team used a 25-4 run the first 7:30 of the second half to turn a 39-31 halftime lead into a blowout and curised to an 88-74 victory over the Citadel in front of a huge crowd Saturday night at the Ramsey Center. Guard Anquell McCollum led a balanced scoring attack that saw eight Catamounts score at least six points with 18 points. "It was a good win," an excited Coach Phil Hopkins commented after the game. "I thought our kids really played hard. We had some stretches playing defense that I couldn't have asked for harder play." McCollum, who only scored five points in the first half, nailed a three-pointer to open the second half and give the Catamounts their largest lead of the game, 42-31. Then the Cats opened the floodgates and scored 10 more unanswered points to push their lead to 52-31 with 16:32 to play. Scott Scholtz hit a layup to cap off the run and give the overflowing crowd room to make some noise. After the Citadel cut the lead to 54-35 a few moments later, the Cats exploded for another 10-0 run to take a whopping 64-35 lead at the 12:30 mark. McCollum scored 11 points during that incredible 25-4 outburst, including three three-point baskets. The Bulldogs never seriously threatened again, as they could get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way. "In the second half we got on a roll," Hopkins added. Point guard Joel Fleming continued his solid play of late. He finished with 14 points and eight assists. "He had a real good game," Hopkins said of his point guard. Fleming also grabbed four rebounds and committed only two turnovers on the night. The Catamounts' defense was the real story of the game. Western held the Bulldogs to just 36 percent shooting (28 of 78) from the field. The Cats also forced the Bulldogs into 14 turnovers. NOTES: The Cats got a solid game offensively from everyone who played. Scholtz and Kullum joined McCollum and Fleming in double figures with 10 and 14 points respectively. Scholtz completed his second career double-double with 10 rebounds. McCollum and Kullum pulled down eight boards apiece. Lady Cat Missy Broy waits for the results photo by Terry K.
