  • November 9,1995 Western Carolinian Features Meat Puppets Album "Rocks Balls" by Jon Lauterer StaffReporter Acid— lots of it. This was the initial thought that ran through my mind as I scanned the lyrics on the inlay of the Meat Puppets' new album No Joke. The presence of the bizarre should not surprise any Meat Puppets fans familiar with Chris and Curt Kirkwood's unorthodox, psychedelic approach to rock. With lyrics like, "On ruby hummingbird wings / Went shivering up and down my spine," it would be safe to say that the Kirkwood brothers have been indulging themselves in extraordinary mental stimulation (if you know what I mean). Some of the songs on the new album sound like Dokken on crack. Almost all of the guitar solos are Curt savagely scraping his strings. These descriptions may sound negative, but the Puppets pull it all off in their own original style. The Meat Puppets are the band that can be described as the exact medium between hard rock and psychedelic light rock. However, they can easily shed that image and just all out "rock balls." This is the case in their first single off of No Joke, "Scum." This song rocks out from the brutal drum intro to the noisy finale. If you liked "Too High to Die", this album is better— presumably because they are rich enough to get the really good drugs. Mountain Heritage Center Hosts Cora Shucking Festival Perk up your ears! It's almost time for the Corn Shucking Festival at Western Carolina University. WCU's Mountain Heritage Center is sponsoring the free festival, set to run from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 11. The event, reminiscent of the old-fashioned corn shucking get-togethers of the past, will be held outside in the Mountain Heritage Center courtyard if the weather is good, and inside the center if it is bad. The festival will include corn shuck craft demonstrations by Annie Lee Bryson of Sylva, Cherokee storyteller Freeman Owle, and traditional corn music and jokes by the Appalachian Tunesmythes (including Fiddlin' Howard Cunningham) of Hiawassee, Georgia. Each visitor to the Com Shucking Festival will also get a chance to shuck some corn. The festival is part of "A Celebration of Com," a new fall program designed to demonstrate the importance of corn in the history and culture of the Southern Appalachians. The program has received funding from the Folklife Section of the North Carolina Arts Council. For more information, contact the Mountain Heritage Center at (704) 227-7129.
