  • October 19,1995 Western Carolinian 19 Sports Cats1 Cross Country Runs Well Again by Brian Clark StaffReporter Charlotte—The Catamount Cross- Country teams continued to improve at the North Carolina Intercollegiate State Cross-Country Championships at McAlpine Park in Charlotte last weekend. The collegiate championship is the oldest race to be held on the course. The Catamount men finished fifth in the meet, down one place from last year's fourth place finish. The Lady Cats placed seventh. The Duke Blue Devils won the men's race with an impressive showing, placing their top five runners in the top 20 overall positions. UNC-CH placed second in the meet, followed by Brevard College in third. Brevard, a national powerhouse at the junior college level, chose to compete at the Division I level this year. After winning the Division II title last year they chose to move up to the Division I level. Wake Forest followed Brevard in fourth place, and the Cats were next in fifth. UNCC, UNCW, Campbell, ECU, Davidson and UNCG finished in this respective order. The North Carolina Tarheels won the women's race, as they placed four of their runners in the top 10. Duke, UNCC, UNCA, ECU, and UNCW placed second through sixth, with the Lady Cats coming in seventh. Davidson, Campbell, UNCG, and Wake Forest completed out the placement for the women's Division I race. For the second week in a row senior Jack Murphy led the Catamount contingent in the men's race. Murphy, a 1994 second team all-conference member, placed 15 in the meet by running a 26:10 over the five mile course. Sophomore Brian Clark placed 19th, four seconds off of Murphy's pace. Freshman Jeremiah Buechner turned in an impressive performance as he placed 27th. Murphy, Clark, and Buechner all ran their personal best times over the five mile distance. Junior Turner Norris and freshman Adam Wallen placed 30th and 49th to round out the Cats top five scoring positions. The Cats were forced to compete without '94 second team all- conference runner Collin Webster due to a pulled hamstring he suffered earlier in the week. Webster should be back to full health before the Southern Conference Championships. In the women's race, junior Kristen Savery continued to run strong and lead the way for the Lady Cats. Savery, who has established herself as one of the Southern Conference's elite ladies, placed 13th in the meet. Savery cruised the 5000 meter course in 18:38. Freshman sensation Erica Theimann had yet another top performance. Theimann placed 20th in the race with a time of 18:57. Red-shirt freshman Alecia Fuduric continued her miracle season by placing 22nd in the race. Fuduric has had to train minimally this year due to a calcium deficiency that has weakened her lower legs. Despite injuries she has run remarkably well. Anne Gardner and Maggie Donahue rounded out the ladies scoring contingent as they placed 46th and 48th respectivelly. The Catamounts will continue to gear up for the Southern Confernce Championships, which will be held on Sunday, October 29th at 10 a.m. in Greenville, South Carolina. Both the men's and women's team have legitimate chances at vying for the title. On the women's side, defending champion Furman will be the team to beat. The men's race looks like it is going to be a dog fight, with Appalachain State, East Tennesse State, UTChattanooga, and WCU all duking it out. Cats Volleyball Home for Three Matches Western Carolina's Lady Catamounts host a three-game homestand this weekend in Cullowhee against UNC-Asheville and Southern Conference foes Marshall and Davidson. Western begins the homestand on Friday night at 7pm against Marshall, then takes on UNC-Asheville Saturday at 7 p.m. and concludes the weekend with a match against Davidson Sunday at 3 p.m. The Catamounts, 7-16 overall and 2-5 in conference play, fell in all three matches last week. WCU lost to Appalachian State last Friday night, 15-6,15-9, 15-10, in Boone. The Cats returned home on Saturday night and lost, 15-6, 17-15, 9-15,15-7, to non-conference opponent DePaul. On Monday, WCU traveled to Johnson City, Tennessee, and lost 15-4, 15-7,15-5 to East Tennessee State. Highlighting the Lady Cats' play last week were three freshmen: Jessica Madden, Laura Timmons, and Keeya McManus, as they combined to average 2.70 kills per game for a .277 attack percentage. Leading the freshmen was Timmons, who totaled 10 kills, seven blocks, and a .400 attack percentage. After missing the first two weeks of the season with a shoulder injury, she has come on to post 28 kills for a team- leading .356 attack percentage in 11 matches. Madden played in seven of 10 games last week, totaling 10 kills for a .250 attack percentage, eight digs, and one service ace. She led the Catamounts in kills against East Tennessee State with seven while spiking for a .353 attack percentage. Madden, who has been sharing time at outside hitter with junior Leanne Dills, is fourth on the team in kills with 112 and is posting a .141 attack percentage. "Jessica has the ability to make an impressive impact as she hits the ball high and takes advantage of blockers," said Head Coach Sara Martin. "In addition, she has a powerful swing." Continuing impressive play at middle blocker is McManus, who posted six kills for a .200 attack percentage last week. She has played in 17 matches and ranks second on the team in blocks per game (0.60). "Keeya and Laura have done an outstanding job of coming in and having an impact at different times," commented Martin. "Both can be very dominating offensively and defensively at the net and continue to learn each week in practice, which has made an obvious difference in their play the last couple of weeks." This weekend's homestand for Western marks the start of a much needed barrage of home matches to finish the season. Of the Catamounts' last 10 regular season matches, seven of them are in WCU's Reid Gymnasium. Courtesy of OPI
