  • October 19,1995 Western Carolinian Environment Andromeda The Daughter of Cepheus & Cassiopeia by Cray Sheedy StaffReporter The Andromeda Galaxy is found in the middle of the Andromeda Constellation. This constellation forms the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. Greek mythology says that Cepheus had to sacrifice Andromeda to save his kingdom. The importance of this constellation is that it contains the galaxy closest to our own. It is amazing to look at the moon when you realize it is a quarter of a million miles away. Now imagine looking at something that is 2.2 million light years away ( a light year is the distance a ray of light can travel in a year's time) - that is how far the Andromeda Galaxy is from the Earth. This closest neighbor is a spiral galaxy just like the Milky Way. The Milky Way is about two-thirds the size of the Andromeda Galaxy. It is composed of a few hundred billion stars. Andromeda Galaxy is sometimes visible to the naked eye. It is a small, hazy light low on the low on the horizon. You will find it by facing geographic North, then look straight down and slightly to the left very low on the horizon. The dust line of the galaxy's spirals can be photographed, but in order to see the spiral shape, you must use at least a low-powered telescope. ^r ■^^fc^- Polaris Mirach The constellation Andromeda is located just left of geographic north, very low on the horizon. The Andromeda Galaxy is between the "knee" and "elbow" of the condemned princess. -not shown in scale with Polaris CAMPUS RAPE AWARENESS WEEK October 23 - 27, 1995 sponsored by SCAAR the Student Coalition Against Acquaintance Rape Monday, Oct. 23 Purple Day Wear purple in recognition of rape awareness week and acknowledge the sexual assault statistics (One out of four women and one out of six men are sexually assaulted or abused).
