  • 10 Western Carolinian September 7,1995 Features Queen Family Plays at Grandparents1 by Phoebe Esmon Staff Reporter On September 10, the Mountain Heritage center, located on the ground floor of the administration building, presented a musical celebration of Grandparents' Day. Members of the Queen family of Jackson County performed at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. They gave a concert of Appalachian tunes and ballads passed down through generations. The show was entitled "All In the Family: A Grandparents' Day Celebration." Mary Jane Queen learned Appalachain ballads and the claw-hammer method of banjo-playing from her father, and passed the musical tradition on to her own children. Her son, Henry, accompanied her on Sunday. Music is so important to the Queen family's way of life that they have built a "picking porch" big enough for them all to play on together. After the performance, the children attending were given the opportunity to learn their own family traditions from their parents and grandparents by making their own family history book.
